Yesterday, Pete helped his buddy Bubba pick out a new rod for his son Dylan… and safe to say it worked out pretty well. 🎣

Nothing better than seeing a kid put a new setup to work and stick a fish like this. Moments like these are what it’s all about.

The spring transition is officially underway on the Bighorn River. While the first Baetis of the season are starting to show, rising fish are still rare, so keep your dry fly expectations tempered for now. It’s about to happen!

Nymphing remains the most productive method for finding consistent action in these tailwater conditions.

Anglers should also take note that the rainbows are in full spawn, making it vital to be mindful of spawning beds. Please avoid stepping on redds to protect the next generation of trout.

With conditions pointing toward a low-water spring, wading access is excellent across both the upper and lower stretches.

First drift at Three Mile and Meg hooks an absolute freight train. Mid-fight the rod snaps at the cork… somehow she keeps pressure on and still lands this 26.5” Bighorn bow.

Broken rod. First drift. Fish of a lifetime. Caught with our guide Brandon Coletti 🤘

Quite a few guests have found carp on their trips these past couple weeks… and let’s just say there’s been some very optimistic first guesses 😅

That slow, heavy pull… the kind that makes you think you’ve finally hooked that 30-inch Bighorn trout…

…aaaand then it rolls.
Nope. Carp 😂

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they’ll keep you honest and put a serious bend in the rod.

Thank you to our guides Dave Hoffman, Colton Maribel and Phil Chamberlain

Spring fishing on the Bighorn River has been as good as it gets.

Low flows, great weather, and fish eating a variety of midges, beatis, sowbugs and scuds.

Our crew has been making the most of it 👊

Our guide with a rainbow that says it all.

There’s something special about spring snow on the river…

A little reminder that every flake is feeding what’s to come.

Some of us are fishing during these small snow storms but most of us are sitting inside planning those spring trips.

Spring is arriving early on the Bighorn, and the window for some of the year’s most technical and rewarding fishing is officialy here! Water temperatures are already trending warmer than average, which has jump-started our spring hatches; we are seeing steady clouds of midges and the first significant Baetis (Blue-Winged Olive) emergence of the season. The river is currently low and gin-clear, offering perfect sight-fishing conditions and stable flows that make both wading and drifting a dream for those looking to target rising fish in the slicks.

With the crowds still thin, now is the time to secure your dates for the month of April before the calendar fills up. The current fish counts are exceptional, but it’s the quality of the trout that has us excited—this spring is producing a higher-than-normal percentage of heavy-shouldered, 20-inch-plus browns and rainbows that are feeding aggressively after the winter months. Whether you’re a dry-fly purist waiting for that perfect BWO overcast day or a nymph fisherman ready to pick apart the deep seams, the system is primed with big, healthy fish!!

March Bighorn Fishing Report:

Our Guide Phishy Phil & his client Mark had an incredible early spring trip finding flawless fish.

The winter chill is finally losing its grip on the high plains, and spring is officially just around the corner on the Bighorn. For those of us who couldn’t wait for the thaw, the reward has been worth the numb fingers. Fishing has been very good across the system. The river is currently transitioning into its most productive Spring phase, offering that classic Bighorn consistency that keeps our reels screaming and the crowds thin.

While the water is clear up top, anglers should note there is still some drifting grass below the 3-mile access. It isn’t a dealbreaker, but it does require a bit more vigilance with your drifts to ensure your presentation stays clean. The fish are tucked into the deeper runs and shelf drops, so concentrate on that type of water and you’ll be in business!

The menu remains fairly specialized for the moment, with Jellybeans, Cotton Candies, Tailwater Sows, Yum Yum sows and Dorsey’s Scuds doing the heavy lifting for most of our guides. These staples, alongside various midge patterns like the Zebra Midge or Manhattan Midge in sizes 18–22, are the ticket to consistent action.

A few fish are up on Midges and the occasional Baetis, but nothing groundbreaking at the moment. We’ll keep you posted!
