Did you know we are in the middle of Flu and Rhino season for horses right now?
If our infectious disease specialists determine there is concern for risk of spread of infectious disease at our hospital and/or on ambulatory calls, our clients will be the first to know and we will adjust our plans accordingly.
Unfortunately, participating in horse activities is not a matter of IF you will encounter infectious disease, rather, WHEN you will encounter it. Just like seasonal cold and flu in people, horses experience different infectious diseases in different seasons.
As all have seen across the country in the last year, viruses like Flu and Herpes can behave similar to viruses in people in that, most of the time, symptoms resolve on their own or with help of fever-reducing medications. On occasions, these diseases can be more severe β think of the neurologic form of Herpes, pneumonia with Flu, purpura side-effects of Strangles, etc.
At Montana Equine, we have specialists in infectious diseases to include diagnosis and treatment of severe cases of infectious disease, as well as having extensive experience with testing and control of outbreaks. Our entire team is highly trained in quarantine and isolation of infectious disease in the veterinary setting to keep ALL our patients safe and competing.
