Not every race weekend ends with a trophy, but every race weekend teaches you something.
Today Reed Family Racing made our first trip to Highland Rim Speedway with Logan while TW is in Indiana.
Practice #1 gave us a baseline to work from, and Logan immediately got to work learning a new track. By Practice #2, he had picked up over a second and a half from his opening laps and was looking much more comfortable behind the wheel.
Our goal for qualifying was simple: match the speed we found in practice. Unfortunately, as Logan took the green flag, he immediately pulled off the racing surface and went silent on the radio. Once he safely got the car stopped, he let us know the chain had come off.
No problem—we replaced the chain, made a few adjustments, and even changed gears in hopes of finding a little more speed.
During Round Robin practice, Logan once again got up to speed and was turning solid laps. However, coming off Turn 4, disaster struck a second time. The chain came off again, this time wrapping around the rear axle and locking it solid. The car instantly spun 360 degrees with all four tires smoking.
In what was probably the save of the day, Logan kept the car off the outside wall and brought it safely back to pit road to a round of applause from fans along the backstretch.
Unfortunately, the issue was once again the chain. After a lengthy inspection and troubleshooting session, we still couldn't identify the root cause. Rather than risk major damage during the feature, we made the difficult decision to load up and head home.
While it's disappointing to leave without racing, sometimes the smartest decision is knowing when to protect your equipment and live to fight another day.
We'll get back to the shop this week, find the problem, make the necessary repairs, and be ready to go next Saturday night at Huntsville Speedway Alabama.
We're proud of Logan's effort today. He continued to improve every time he hit the track, stayed calm through adversity, and made an incredible save when things went wrong.
We'll be back.
