This week I'm starting work on a project with a friend. A project about CONFIDENCE. One of the things I'm mulling over is how confidence impacts our motivation. When we're trying to do something big, scary, or important, we need enough confidence to approach tough effort with optimism.

I'm wondering though if there's an essential difference between how we think about CONFIDENCE and how we see BRAVERY. Does confidence indicate CERTAINTY? A mind already made up? Does bravery exist in the space where UNCERTAINTY and the DRIVE TO TRY combine?

As we're out on our Wild + Brave adventures, we need to access a kind of motivation for our efforts that pushes our minds open, that explores without waiting to get completely in control. To show up to life with a mind ready to work, instead of a mind already made up.

May you find the brave confidence to show up for hard efforts today, and give yourself permission to keep learning along the way.

Loved this...heard master artist and culture care thought leader Makoto Fujimura say this on Substack where he shared his experience meeting Pope Francis. Thought it was worth saving to my notebook and sharing.

It was 55 degrees when I woke up, and the Cypress Trees called me. Recharging my attention with some Tree Therapy! Love this wild, quiet place. Even my ears are safe here. I think I can finish writing my book now. šŸ˜Ž

Learning to start my days slowly. Living with a hearing disability, and navigating sensory pain is teaching me to allow room for nourishing my spirit, mind, and body in new ways. Maybe ways that we all need. But when the volume is stuck on LOUD it is even more helpful to let the quiet into my spirit.

I’ve been memorizing Psalm 144 for the tough days. Repeating it to myself to breathe through the worst of my neurological symptoms.
I say ā€œBlessed be God, my Mountainā€ and my mind reminds my heart how strong and stable the God Who is caring for me is.

I say ā€œHe trains me to fight fair and wellā€ and am encouraged that any battle I face is one He is teaching me how to fight…that my fight isn’t going to hurt others (fair) and isn’t going to destroy me (well).

I call Him my BEDROCK…and think on how He is holding me up.

I call Him my CASTLE…and look through my memories for ways He has made me safe.

I call Him my RESCUING KNIGHT and pour out all my hearts fears and terrors into His Heart, calling on His powerful rescue.

I call Him the HIGH CRAG where I run for dear life and remember in all my days in the Rocky Mountains and Utah desert wilderness how a high crag like that can SAVE YOUR LIFE when you are lost in the wild, with predators after you. And I confess where I feel chased, dropping my makeshift weapons where I am trying to handle it on my own and just RUN TO HIM.

Who is up for turning the tide of chaos and frustration? I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for MORE GOOD MOMENTS!

We stop practicing acceptance when unacceptable things happen. It's normal to try to protect ourselves, when negative events seem to stack up. But without acceptance, we can't discover new possibilities, see the good mixed in with the mess, or move toward positive change.

Don't wait for "things to get better" before you let your guard down. Often you'll miss the turning of the tide because you're in lockdown mode. You've probably noticed by now that "preparing for the worst" and "not getting our hopes up" doesn't actually make more good things happen...it just acclimates you to expecting more of what you don't want.

So try this today.

It's something small, totally tiny, and it can absolutely change your experience of life. Like all wild ideas, it'll take some guts to go in on a tiny brave action that seems too small to make a difference. But if you are brave enough to try, your positive results will be your reward.

Ready to try a tiny brave action?

ENJOY something today. Something that's already in your life, already "happening to you." Let yourself notice the good, the happy, the potential, the hope, the differentness. Sometimes change gets a bad name...but it's good sometimes right?

Today, enjoy something.

Let us know what happens!

It’s official. Holiday season 2020 calls for a full Christmas village. I know we haven’t celebrated Thanksgiving yet, and we will...but I’ve waited as long as I can wait. Today we started with the messy bits...boxes and styrofoam and tiny trees and homemade bits of Christmas village that are nearly 20 years old. Crumbling to bits but brimming with potential. Tomorrow ill post the pretty results, but I kinda love the messy beginning. @ Fort Myers, Florida

Afternoon treat! Didn’t know I’d grow up to be someone who makes homemade hazelnut milk but I’m enjoying it! And thanks to an error in my cake baking the apple cake turned out even moister and more perfect! Definitely adding that ā€œerrorā€ to the cookbook for next time!
