Happy birthday today to Montell Griffin, who was born on this day, June 6, in 1970. Years ago, while I was living in Cincinnati and promoting fights throughout the Midwest, I did quite a bit of work with Montell’s father, Clarence. Clarence was the owner of the famed Windy City Gym, in Chicago. On occasion, he would send me fighers for my shows and we used to speak quite a bit. I always enjoyed working with him. I remember him telling me that his son, Montell, would become something special. Boy was he right!

Montell won the 1992 U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships by defeating Frank Vassar. He also defeated future heavyweight contender Jeremy Williams at the box-offs, to make the 1992 Olympic team. His amateur record was 36-5. At the Olympics, he settled for a Silver medal, losing a controversial decision to Torsten May, of Germany.

Montell, nicknamed "Ice," began his pro career in 1993 and rose to prominence when he defeated James Toney twice by decisions in 1995 and 1996. The second victory over Toney earned Griffin a lucrative bout against WBC champion Roy Jones, Jr. Griffin handed Jones his first professional defeat via a disqualification. A frustrated Jones dropped Griffin in round nine and then hit him again twice on the head after Griffin had taken a knee on the canvas, leading to Jones's disqualification. They had an immediate rematch and Jones regained the WBC title by knocking out Griffin in the first round.

After the loss to Jones, Griffin remained a top-ranked light-heavyweight for six years. He won 11 of his next 12 bouts, losing only a controversial split decision to undefeated but unknown southpaw Eric Harding, despite knocking him down and out-landing him according to punchstats.

Montell compiled a very respectable resume over the course of his career: he has two wins over James Toney, a disqualification victory over Roy Jones Jr., and wins over contenders Ka-Dy King, Ray Lathon, Randall Yonker, Derrick Harmon and George Khalid Jones. His final professional ring record was 50 – 8- 1.

Clarence Griffin was inducted into the Illinois Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016. Rest in peace, my old friend.

Montell has carried his father’s legacy with honor and has created his own great legacy. Happy birthday, Montell and many more.

Today, June 5, I am thinking of Don "War a Week" Chargin. Don began boxing in high school. An injury forced him out of the ring, but fortunately, not out of boxing. While still in high school he worked as a boxing coach and learned all he could about the sport. Chargin soon found his niche as a matchmaker and promoter.

His first promotion, at the age of 23, was Eddie Chavez vs. Manuel Ortiz on September 3, 1951. Chargin never looked back and ended up promoting over 3000 fights, including Carl (Bobo) Olson vs. Paddy Young, Jerry Quarry vs. Jimmy Ellis, Joey Giambra vs. Chico Vejar and such fighters as Muhammad Ali, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pipino Cuevas, Lupe Pintor, Roberto Duran, Bobby Chacon, Mando Ramos, Danny "Little Red" Lopez, Pete Ranzany, Carlos Palomino and Tony (The Tiger) Lopez among countless others.

From 1964 to 1984, he served as matchmaker at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, working in association with fellow Hall of Famer Aileen Eaton. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. Don died at the age of 90. Rest in peace my friend.

Happy heavenly birthday to Raul "Sugar" Ramos, from our great U. S. Air Force Boxing Team in 1965 & 1966. Raul was a great fighter, teammate and friend many years ago and really helped me back then as I was the youngest member of that great team. Throughout the years, five of us were able to reconnect: Willie Blaylock, Joe Souza, Formus White, Raul Ramos and myself. Now, only Willie and I are left. My thoughts and prayers are for Linda Ramos, Raul's beautiful wife and his great family. Raul, rest in peace great champion - June 5, 1940 - July 29, 2023. We miss you.

SJC Boxing wishes a happy birthday today, June 4, to FBHOF Class of 2018 Inductee Johnny Torres. Johnny has been a fighter all his life. At the age of 15, when Johnny first walked into a local boxing gym, he knew how to fight but not how to box. Johnny trained hard and learned to box. After a few months he had his first amateur fight. Not long after, Johnny turned Pro. In all, Johnny fought a total of 25 fights and became the first Mexican-American fighter in the state to be fighter of the year and win 2 state championships in 2 different weight divisions; Junior Welterweight and Lightweight.

In 1986 his trainer and mentor Ben Lonic passed away and left Johnny with the Homestead boxing program. Through the late 1980’s into the mid 1990’s Johnny established himself as promoter, manager, booking agent, match maker and as the Homestead Police Athletic Boxing program head coach. Johnny generated an amateur boxing team that produced Golden Glove and Silver Grove champions. Johnny was invited to the Olympic training facilities in Colorado Springs as guest coach to the USA Olympic boxing team.

Johnny Torres understands that it takes discipline and hard work to overcome adversity and has been passing that on to the next generation. Happy birthday my friend and many more!

Happy heavenly birthday to former world champion Saoul Mamby who would have turned 79 today but passed away on December 17, 2019. He was a great guy and a friend.

Saoul was a Vietnam Veteran who began his professional career in 1969 and fought his last bout in 2008. He was one of only a couple of boxers who fought in five different decades and, at age 60, one of the oldest fighters to ever have a sanctioned bout. A true champion in and out of the ring. Rest in peace my friend.

Saoul was inducted posthumously into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Twenty-eight years ago today, June 2, 1998, Freeman Barr captured the NABO middleweight title by defeating Lee Fortune. Fortune was also the former WBC Intercontinental champion. Freeman scored a knockdown in round eight with a body shot, and pitched a shutout on the scorecards after twelve rounds. Good memories!

A great time in Panama in 2002 with Hall of Fame Champions Eusebio Pedroza and Ismael Laguna. Rest in peace Eusebio.

One year ago today, May 31, 2025, the great three-time world champion Mike McCallum - "The Body Snatcher," passed away. Mike was inducted into both the International Boxing and Florida Boxing Halls of Fame. Truly, one of the ring greats and one of the nicest people. Last time I was with Mike I said to him, "You can't make 154 lbs. anymore." He said, "No, but I still have my left hook!" Rest in peace my friend, we miss you greatly.
