One of the most common crate training mistakes we see is treating the crate as a management tool before taking the time to build value for it.

A crate can be one of the most valuable tools in dog training, but only when your dog genuinely enjoys spending time there.

Think of it less as a crate and more as your dog’s bedroom.
Feed meals there. Offer special chews there. Encourage rest there. Make it a place where good things consistently happen.

Over time, many dogs will begin choosing their crate on their own because it has become a place of comfort and security.

Frisbee is one of our favorite ways to build engagement and have fun with dogs.

Many owners jump straight to throwing the frisbee through the air, but the best place to start is actually on the ground.
Building enthusiasm and confidence first creates a much stronger foundation for the game.

Remember: your goal isn’t to create an impressive frisbee dog in a day. Your goal is to create a dog that loves playing with you. Keep sessions short, positive, and successful. The catches will come later.

You won’t always notice progress while you’re in it.

Sometimes it looks like repeating the same thing over and over:
The same leash work.
The same place command.
The same recall practice.
The same reminders.

Then one day it hits you … your dog walked past another dog without pulling.
Settled calmly on a patio.
Checked in with you automatically.
Made a choice they used to struggle with.

As more places welcome dogs, we think it’s important to remember that dog-friendly spaces only continue being dog-friendly when dogs can successfully exist in them.

One of our favorite tools for helping dogs navigate those environments? An “In Training” vest.

For many dogs, the vest becomes more than just something they wear. It can become a cue that it’s time to focus, stay engaged with their handler, and work through the world with more structure.

We also love the communication aspect. It helps create boundaries with the public and gives owners more control over when and how interactions happen.

Lake days, sprinklers, paddleboarding, kiddie pools - water fun can be a great way to keep dogs cool and enriched during the warmer months.

A few important reminders before heading out:

✔️ Not all dogs are strong swimmers — consider a life jacket and monitor for fatigue
✔️ Avoid stagnant water and always check for blue-green algae warnings
✔️ Bring fresh drinking water to prevent dogs from overdrinking from lakes or the ocean
✔️ If boating, keep dogs away from the back of the boat where carbon monoxide can accumulate

This time of year is the sweet spot.

Not too hot. Not too cold. Longer days. Everything blooming.
It’s the easiest time to get out and actually train your dog.
And it matters more than people think.

Because all those new smells, environments, and distractions?
That’s not just enrichment, it’s opportunity.

Opportunity to build recall when it’s not 90° out.

Opportunity to work through distractions before they’re overwhelming.

Opportunity to create a dog that can function outside your neighborhood.

But most people skip that part.

They get outside more and let their dog rehearse the same behaviors on repeat.

Pulling. Ignoring. Checking out.

And by the time summer hits, it feels like a bigger problem than it needed to be.

Train now while it’s easy.
