Design1 6’10 1970 surfboard. $500

Design 1 (also styled Design One) was a short-lived East Coast surfboard brand produced by Surf Jet Manufacturing in Deer Park, Long Island, New York, roughly 1967–1970.
Your board’s prominent “Design 1” logo (in the characteristic ornate, multi-colored lettering) and the circular “WAVEHOG / DESIGN 1 – INSPIRED / AUTHENTIC / GRADE-A” stamp match the branding used by this company.
Key details
• Manufacturer: Surf Jet Manufacturing, a large (≈20,000 sq ft) factory operation bankrolled by Huntington Hartford (A&P supermarket fortune heir). It aimed for high-volume production (estimates around 3,000 boards per year at peak) with modern facilities including multiple shaping stalls and extensive glassing racks.
• Location: Deer Park / Industry Park, Long Island, NY — an unusual base for a surf brand at the time, far from California or Hawaii.
• Team / shapers & models: The company recruited well-known names for models and promotion, including:
• Butch Van Artsdalen
• Fred Hemmings (1968 World Champion)
• Rodney Sumpter
• Dennis (sometimes listed as Bill) Choate
• Others associated with the operation included Dick Catri (team leader) and shapers such as Mike Createau (“Great White”). Models referenced in period material and surviving examples include Slider, Fred Hemmings model, Reflector, and Bunger-related designs.
• Era & style: Late 1960s into the early shortboard transition / early 1970s. Boards often feature period details such as flipped or “swoop” noses, fuller fun-shape outlines, and typical glassing of the time. Surviving examples in collections (e.g., Coronado Surf & Lifestyle Museum) are typically in the 7’0”–7’6” range with various widths and thicknesses suited to the era.
• “Wavehog” stamp: This appears to be a specific model name or quality/grade designation used by Design 1 / Surf Jet (distinct from the modern Sunova Wavehog or other “Wave Hog”/“Waterhog” boards). The stamp on your yellow board (“DESIGN 1 – INSPIRED / AUTHENTIC / GRADE-A”) reinforces it as an original Design 1 product.
