Rocking my “Lift Every Voice and Sing” shirt from Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, where I had the honor of leading songs at their Vacation Bible School a few weeks ago.

Starting a new thing: a song a week, same song all week, because if I say something enough times in swim lessons, it turns into a song. And if it’s stuck in my head, maybe it’ll get stuck in yours too.

This week: Eyes On or Hands On 👀🤚 the #1 rule for parents and swim instructors. At all times in the water, you’ve got eyes on your child OR hands on your child. If something pulls your attention away for even a second: hands on. That’s it.

I’ve got pool access all through September, and I’m loving watching my students remember everything they know 🌊

Sunday night I was on a call with Ulrika Faerch through Superhero Swim University about something I think about constantly: the power swim instructors hold. Parents come to us vulnerable. Children come to us vulnerable, sometimes afraid. We’re seen as the expert in that moment - and there’s so much more possible in a lesson than just “swim skills.”

This is the heart of Story, Song & Swim: regulation, trust, and connection first, skills follow naturally.

Before he ever touches the water, we do our ritual: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. Singing this song is training him to wait, to check in, to know what comes next.

Today that training just… worked. He started in the shallow end, climbed down, and jumped into the deep end on his own. And then something over a year in the making clicked back into place — he got himself to the side, pushed off, swam back, floated on his back, rolled himself over. All of it. Things I taught him more than a year ago, just living in his body now.

For 20 minutes his mom and I just stood on the deck and watched him play. Explore. Be free. When it was time to go, I sang the same closing song I sing at the end of every lesson, and that was all it took. He climbed out, took his towel, held his mom’s hand. Calm. Regulated. Done.

This is why I do this work. Swim time isn’t just about learning life saving skills, for kids like him, it’s regulation. It’s freedom. It’s a nervous system finding its own rhythm.

I was on the treadmill at Asheville Racquet Club South when I saw him through the window. One of my swim students, going off the diving board for the first time.

I hadn’t seen him in six months.

I ran outside to say hello, and before I could even get a word out, he started singing the story and song we used in our lessons together. I jumped in the water in my clothes and we picked up right where we left off.

This is why I do what I do. Story, Song & Swim isn’t just about teaching kids to swim. It’s about building something that lasts, even through the gaps.

Hearing how the Story, Song & Swim methodology is working for other instructors is so rewarding.

I was in the middle of a delivery shift when Michelle Ring called to tell me how well it’s working for her students.

“I want to tell everyone about this!” she said.

I was in tears as she shared story after story of her students’ progress using the story and song.

I’m looking for more instructors interested in giving this a try — with individual students or parent-child classes.

Back in North Carolina and already back in the water

I taught a new family this week, a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, and both of them floated independently on their very first day. The 4-year-old asked her mom to read The Caterpillar’s Song of Courage to her at home that night.

When I tech, I help kiddos feel safe enough in their bodies to try something scary, and then carry that courage with them even outside the pool.

I’ll be leading a workshop at the superhero Swim Academy instructor workshop October 1-4 in South Florida.
