February 1861.

Delegates from the seceded states gathered and established a Confederate government with a provisional constitution and provisionally elected Jefferson Davis as president. His inauguration would take place at the end of the month in Montgomery Alabama.

This provisional government created a Peace Commission to try to avoid a war with the United States, but the efforts fell apart.

Texas voted for secession, while Tennesee did not.

Arkansas troops seized the United States Arsenal at Little Rock and forced the Federal garrison to withdraw on February 8th. They seized the United States ordnance stores at Napoleon, Arkansas on February 12th.

Texas began taking arsenals and garrisons across the state.

The Choctaw Nation aligned with the southern states.

Lincoln is officially announced as the president-elect, and arrived in Washington, D.C. for his inauguration.

We have scheduled our first training camp of the season. All troopers are expected to attend to be allowed in ranks for the season. Troopers should come with clean weapons, fit horses, proper uniforms, and tack in good working order.

March 20th - 22nd

Friday the 20th is slated to set up camp, with dinner being served while we discuss our bylaws, expectations and standards for the unit. We will also go over events scheduled for the year.

Saturday the 21st will be boots in saddle all day, with safety protocols and drills being the main focus.

Sunday the 22nd will be used to cover any possible issues needing addressed before everyone heads home.

Many times we get asked the question, why do you reenact?

The answers can vary from person to person, but a common theme often occurs; a love for history.

Today a couple troopers took the time to visit the Patton Museum, located in Ft. Knox KY.

But what does this have to do with the civil war?

If not for the War Between the States, the life of a young general may have turned out very differently.

A colonel named George Smith Patton fought in the battle of Wi******er in September of 1864, where he was mortally wounded. After his fall in battle, a servant retrieved the saddle. Bringing it through both lines of battle he was able to return the Colonelโ€™s saddle, wallet, and saber to the wife of George, General Pattonโ€™s grandmother. Later, Pattonโ€™s father and even the young Patton himself learned to ride in that very saddle.

General Patton was an avid horseman and rider, and learning of his history and connection to cavalry before it became fully mechanized was a great learning experience.

January 1861.

South Carolina, the first state to secede from the Union, fires upon a merchant shipโ€”the Star of the Westโ€”which had been commissioned to bring supplies and troops to Fort Sumter. The ship is forced to turn back.

Mississippi secedes on the 9th, followed by Florida. Union garrisons spike their guns at Pensacola and withdraw to Fort Pickens, which will remain under Union control throughout the war.

Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana soon follow, joining the other states in secession.

Kansas is admitted to the Union under a constitution that prohibits slavery.

Tensions across the states and the nation continue to rise. North Carolina remains divided, though support for secession grows stronger by the day.

Welcome to the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry! We are a group of seasoned civil war cavalry reenactors portraying mounted troopers from various companies of the 1st OVC from 1861 to 1865. Traveling across the country to fight and ride, we strive to be horseman first, and historically accurate reenactors second.
