Hey sports parents:

It’s July - which means we’ve completed the first half of our sports parenting year.

Speaking in our terms:
We’ve hit halftime of 2025.

And I’m wondering if we can all use this moment intentionally…

… if we can do what a coach would do at halftime of the game — which is pause, reflect, evaluate and then adjust — but instead it’s you doing that for your own effort so far… with the intention to make the second half even better…

Ask yourself:

▪️Have I checked in lately with my athlete about how they’re feeling about their sport?

▪️Have I asked them what they need more or less of from me as I support them through it?

▪️Does my child know I value what kind of human they are over any team trophy won or game MVP earned?

▪️Have I thanked my child’s coach?

▪️What mistakes did I make on the sidelines or on the car ride, and how will I do better moving forward?

▪️How have we done prioritizing family time?

▪️Where did my own ego creep into my athlete’s experience, and how can I minimize it moving forward?

▪️How can I maximize car rides to practices and games with my athlete and create more connection with them?

Sometimes — for sports parents — our lives move so fast we don’t often take the time to slow down and think about how we’re operating. We let autopilot take the wheel instead of exiting the highway for a quick rest and recenter both ourselves and our athletes.

But if we preach to our athletes to learn, grow and get better, shouldn’t we be doing the same in our role to support them?

Let’s use this halftime of the year to celebrate what’s going well … and also be willing to be honest with ourselves about where we can be better for our kids.
