Grant’s RMC America’s Trophy Rd. 3 Recap🏁

Qualifying: P4 of 17
Pre-Final: P4 to P5
Final: P5 to P4

Grant’s Gabble: It was a fun and challenging day. I started with an uphill battle by having to start qualifying in last because of some old fuel we had. I still managed to qualify 4th and I was happy with that. In the heat, I ran too much of a racing line and did not protect enough and got shoved around. I learned for the main event and put together a good race. I went off track once and lost a few spots and it made me angry and I fought back and we ended up 4th overall.

Grant had a great day of learning and racing with the best. It requires a different and more aggressive style of racing that will only be learned with more repetition. He’s been a sponge all weekend and adapted to changing track conditions as we’re looking forward to taking today’s gains and implementing them into tomorrow.

Grant’s Gabble: (📺 see video)

Grant’s first Beginner Box race was a success. He made a couple of little mistakes in qualifying that he was pretty tough on himself over, but he rebounded and had a great heat where he got shuffled to the back on the start and made some assertive passes. In the feature, he found a nice diamond line in 1-2 where he made great moves to get to the front. A few mistimed cautions caused him to have to make passes more than once, and ultimately just took too long to get to the leader. His ability to setup passes was exciting to watch and we’re really looking forward to running more of these races!

William’s words: I liked it because I was sliding. The guy in front of me went too high so I just slided under him and got in front of him. I was happy that I got third. (All in monotone)

William had a solid night in his second ever Outlaw Kart race. He got bottled with lappers in qualifying, but still managed to go p5 and have a solid heat to lock into the feature. When the green flag dropped, he got roughed up the first few laps and lost spots and played catch-up the rest of the race, making some slick moves. Once he can become the aggressor early on, he’ll make it easier on himself. We’re proud of his ability to be able to step into such a competitive series and be in contention right away!

So saddened to hear of the passing of Kyle Busch. He was a true RACER. He was a great example of mastering his craft, dominating that, and then stepping out of his comfort zone in new disciplines, and kicking butt in that too. When we all set out on this journey, we aspire to be the racer he is, but there is and only will ever be one Kyle Busch. Thoughts and prayers to his entire family and especially his son Brexton as he navigates his racing journey without his biggest supporter.

Busy and changing times for the Heckman Bros lately. Between our team leader starting a couple of new businesses, the end of the school year, playing new sports and on top of everything, MOVING, there haven’t been many weekends spent at the racetrack.

We’ve lived in Fort Dodge, IA the past four years and have not given ourselves the opportunity to enjoy what our great community offers. Weekly, like clockwork, we would hit I-20 East for 800+ mile roadtrips to race somewhere, dirt or pavement. Our approaching move has forced us to slow down and enjoy the little things around us and let the kids do normal activities. There has been no shortage of soccer, baseball, golf and off-reading over this past month. They’ve enjoyed this different pace of fun, but are also eager to get back on track soon!

Here’s a video of Grant and dad doing some trail riding this past weekend at the Lizard Creek Water Trail: https://youtu.be/mkzfqKYp_r0?si=L6uNq5yhRwm6hk1F

Grant’s Gabble: I was excited to race at Trackhouse at and run my first big micro race. I felt really good going into the weekend, but I made a lot of little mistakes all weekend. In the first heat I got a good start, but got passed a lot in the turn 8 hairpin. I was not very aggressive in my passes and in the second heat, when I was finally having a good run, I hit the turn 11 barrier and got hit by a couple of karts and flew out of my go-kart onto the race track. I was a little scared for my next race, but I rebounded and made some good moves and got my confidence back. In the main, I was not aggressive enough early and it hurt me because when I finally found my rhythm the pack had already separated. It was fun racing with MPG and making new friends in the tent.

Lots of learning was had and not much retention or corrections took place in Grant’s first national Micro Swift race. Our driving lines were a tick off in a couple of areas and when the green flags flew, we were never aggressive enough. After a very humbling weekend, Grant and dad are seeing the commitment it takes to get back up to the front. Soon, he will have the ability to get much needed seat time to improve his craft and work on fine tuning the go kart in these changing, big weekend conditions.
