A lot of the sleep advice out there right now focuses on strict schedules and limiting responses at night.
And I do believe predictability matters. Children thrive when thereâs a rhythm they can count on.
But strict schedules are a different thing.
Most of the schedules circulating right now were built around higher sleep needs, so they already donât fit a lot of children. And following something rigid adds stress to the whole family: watching the clock, anxious when things donât go to plan. That stress doesnât stay outside the bedroom.
What we actually need is a predictable rhythm that fits your child specifically.
When I work with a family, we look at the whole child. Schedule, yes, but also temperament, rhythms, nutrition, movement, sensory needs, whatâs happening developmentally. Sleep is a combination of factors, and when we focus only on schedule, weâre looking at one small piece of the picture.
So if youâve tried every schedule out there and nothing has lasted, thatâs not failure. Thatâs information.
Schedule might be part of whatâs affecting your childâs sleep. But itâs probably not the schedule youâve been following, and itâs almost certainly not the only thing. Most of the time itâs a combination of factors working together. Until you look at all of them, youâre only ever solving part of the problem.
Thatâs the difference between guessing and actually understanding your child.
