An athlete is defined as someone who “is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.”
Hmm, seems to me that anyone involved with horses should be considered an athlete. Still not sure yet? Let’s break it down:
Physical strength- carrying hay bales, grain bags, buckets of water, heavy ranch saddles, handling big dumb toddler horses that want to run you over, I could keep going but you get the picture.
Agility- any time you step on or around your horse you must have agility or you risk getting bucked off, stepped on, bit, kicked, run over. Again I could keep going, but if you’re not agile, you get hurt.
Stamina- you ever go long trot a horse for laps around the arena or down the road and you get about 2 minutes in and you can’t breathe? Yah, that’s your stamina, or lack there of.
You don’t need to be a “professional” in order to be in shape to ride. If you interact with horses, at any level, you are an athlete. That means you need to train like one.
That means:
Focusing on fitness through exercise and resistance training
Cardiovascular endurance and health
Mobility, flexibility and recovery of the body
Nutrition to support your goals and longevity
Mental well-being
Take care of yourself, train like an athlete and watch how much your time in the saddle improves. Join the Riding Strong Community for more rider fitness content, linked in bio.
