Every fall, there's a brief window when the alpine larches turn brilliant shades of gold. Photographer and conservation scientist Brandt Ryder set out to catch that fleeting moment.

From early mornings and unpredictable mountain weather to breathtaking views, Brandt’s images remind us why we get outside in the first place — and why these wild places are worth protecting.
