Starting Marksmen Metal wasn’t really about starting a business. It was about chasing work that fit who I am better.

I’ve always enjoyed building, solving problems, and creating things with my hands far more than sitting behind a desk. The process hasn’t been perfect, and honestly I’m still figuring a lot of it out as I go. But this kind of work feels a lot more natural to me than desk work ever did.

Just trying to build good gear, spend more time doing meaningful work, and enjoy the process along the way.

Long range shooting doesn’t have to start with a $10,000 setup. An accurate rifle, reliable optics, and a consistent load will take you farther than most people think. Learn your rifle, spend time behind it, and the distance starts shrinking fast.

Someone told me their favorite time to shoot was in the wind.
I’ve shot in wind but not like this.

Yesterday was 30+ mph gusts.
A 10” plate at 600 yards usually isn’t anything crazy… but it felt like a quarter.

We got a few hits, but it was more timing than skill.
Learned a lot, had a good time, and we’ll be back at it.

I got tired of range gear turning simple range trips into a process. Different ranges, different terrain, different problems every time. Heavy stands are stable but miserable to move around, and lightweight stuff usually feels flimsy.

The Buck was basically my attempt to find a middle ground. Something stable enough to trust, but still light and simple enough that I actually want to bring it with me. Quick setup, easy to move, and compact enough that it doesn’t take over the whole truck bed.

It’s not indestructible and it’s not meant for every shooter. It just solves a lot of the problems I kept running into.

Sometimes the gear gives its life for the mission.

In the pursuit of “better content,” my camera tripod volunteered as tribute at 600 yards today. Never flinched. Never complained. Just stood there and took one for the company.

To be clear… the tripod was not the target. But once we walked down there and saw the footage, nobody was even mad about it anymore.

That’s alright though. Range days are supposed to leave a mark on something.

Keeping your targets as low to the ground as your terrain safely allows gives you a much better chance of spotting splash when you miss. Dirt movement, dust, rocks, and debris can tell you a lot about your correction without needing a spotter standing beside you.

Especially when shooting at distance, that immediate feedback speeds up adjustments and keeps you from guessing where your round went. A target hanging unnecessarily high can actually take away valuable feedback that the terrain would otherwise give you.

Not every miss is wasted if you can read it.

First trip of the year where we actually had to go somewhere to shoot… and it showed. I stood there packing like I’d never done it before, digging through the pack trying to remember what all I used to bring without making three trips back to the shop. Ammo, mags, ears, eyes… felt like I was missing something but I rolled with it anyway. Sure enough, about halfway down the road I realized I forgot my phone adapter for the optics. Just knocking the dust off.
