The 2021-22 Lady Cardinal season came to an end this past weekend with a loss in the quarter finals against #2 ranked, (11-0) Cornerstone Christian, 41-50. The LadyCards were neck and neck with the Cougars and even tied the ball game up with 2:00 to go when freshman, Mealii Parker-Akau hit from behind the arc, splashing a three! The point guard battle took place all night as sophomore, Stevie Lundquist finally met a challenging opponent. Cornerstone was methodical, played at their pace, and never fell to pressure. The Card’s played with tenacity, perseverance, and courage but in the end when Lundquist received her fifth foul, the Cougars took the last bite and won by nine. The Card’s battle was well fought with Lundquist bringing down 15 boards and 34 points. Junior, Kaya DeLuca, defended well against their big, keeping her out of the paint. Freshman guards, Mealii Parker-Akau and Sage Starkweather, defended with hustle and a competitive nature that made it difficult for the Cougars to score. Congrats to the Cardinals for making it to the second round of NCS playoffs as well as earning an undefeated NCLIII league season (7-0), and all this, without a senior representing! The Cardinals will be back full force!

Good luck to the Fort Bragg Lady Wolves as they meet up with the Middletown Mustangs at 7pm, where the Wolves look to take it from the Stangs backed by their last meeting where they only lost by 3 without their PG and star guard, JC Clavelle, for the entire fourth quarter. Clavelle and her squad look to vindicate themselves and advance to the second round on Saturday!

Mendocino Cardinals Win NCL III pennant; Lady Cards Complete Undefeated Season for First Time Since 2015-16 Basketball Season

The Mendocino Cardinals high school basketball teams completed their regular season last night facing off with the visiting Anderson Valley Panthers for the last NCL III league game of the year. The Lady Cards were on fire from the get-go, putting on the pressure, moving well on defense, and getting steals, capitalizing on the offensive end, taking an immediate huge lead on the Panthers. All the Lady Cards saw court time and did very well on both ends of the court. Junior power forward, Kaya DeLuca, for the Cardinals ate everyone up in the key, gathering 16 rebounds and scoring 8. DeLuca has become quit the hot outside shooter for the Cardinals as well, making her an even more awesome offensive weapon. Sophomore guard, Mealii Parker-Akau used her tenacity and speed to defend very well and also added 6 points to the 58-36 victory with a few crossover drives to the hoop that were amazing. Junior forward, Ella Casey, also did super well inside the key rebounding solidly and executing put backs. Freshman guard, Sage Starkweather used her conditioned speed to beat the Panthers to the spot, getting courageous steals and getting to the hoop. Finally, the Cards were led by the NCL III leading scorer, rebounder, assist manager, block queen, and steal artist, Sophomore guard/center, Stevie Lundquist, scoring 28 points and ended her regular season with 445 points, well on her way to the 1000-point club even without having a freshman year because of Covid. The NCS division 6 seed meeting will take place this Sunday, Feb. 13th, when the Cards will find out who and where they will play on Wednesday, Feb. 16th in the first round of play-offs. The Lady Cards ended with a 14-5 overall record and a 7-0 NCL III undefeated league season.

On the boys side, The Cardinal boys also took the big win against the visiting Panthers who were scrappy and quite vocal. In the 62-37 victory, Sophomore guard, Dylan Zeramby, took control of the momentum in the second quarter, stealing the ball and then setting up shots for his teammates, ending the night with 7 assists. Zeramby was also super-hot from 3-point land, scoring 9 from the arc and a total of 15 for the victory. NCL III scoring and rebounding leader, junior guard, Sunny Varisano, took flight and laid in many high percentage shots, ending his regular season with 17 points against the Panthers. Varisano has a total of 373 points in this season and helped lead the Cards to a 7-1 league record, and a 14-5 overall record. The boys also will get an automatic birth in the NCS tourney this coming week with results to be posted on Sunday.

It is very likely that the Cardinals will both get a home playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 16th because of their records and game times will be 5:30pm/7:00pm.

Cardinal Boys Varsity Basketball Squaring Off for D6 Championship Title
The 2021-22 Mendocino Cardinals Varsity Boys team are on a tear this past few weeks heading into the last week of league action with a 5-game winning streak and scoring wins with an average of 80 points. In league action, the Cardinals have only taken one loss to the Point Arena Pirates in the beginning of the season and hold a strong 5-1 record with two games left this week at home against Round Valley (Tuesday, Feb. 8th @ 7pm) and Anderson Valley (Thursday, Feb.10th @ 7pm). Round Valley posts the same record as the Cardinals so essentially Tuesday game will be the deciding factor for a league champ. The Cardinals overall current record is 12-5. If the Cardinals can sweep this week’s games, they will host their first playoff game and probably receive a high seed in the 16 team NCS Division 6 high school playoff tournament, making it very exciting for the Cardinal basketball team and community.
The Cardinals are secure right now with their sharp-shooter, Sunny Varisano lighting it up from three-point land, mid-range, and at the rim, making it very hard to guard him. Varisano is averaging 20 PPG, and 9 RPG. Junior guard, Yoel Ephraim has given the bright spark to the Cardinals with his tenacity, speed, and conditioning, wreaking havoc on the offenses that the Cardinals are faced with. Yoel gets rebounds that really matter because he is in the right place at the right time, getting there with complete hustle and extreme effort. Another guard who is undeniably the fastest guard in the league, senior, Devon Hawkins, just drops defenses with his moves and dribble skills adding another weapon to the Cardinals offensive artillery. Big man, senior 6’6 forward, Charlie Jones, has really stepped up in the key, providing an inside presence on both ends of the court. Sophomore guard, Dylan Zeramby and freshman guard, Abel Garvin, both are huge assets to the Cardinal offense and both are racking up important steals on defensive end, adding to the winning vibe of the Mendocino Cardinal streak.
These games will be great entertainment as the league comes to a close this weekend. Playoff seeding will occur this Sunday, Feb. 13th and the Cardinals will receive their destiny at that point with a new focus on Division 6, the NCS tournament!

Winning Streaks in Hoops on the Coast
The 2021-22 Mendocino Cardinals Varsity girls’ basketball team is on a 4 game winning streak and are seeking an undefeated league title in the NCL III league. This coming week (Feb. 8th and Feb. 10th), the Cards will face the Covelo Mustangs at home on Tuesday, and the Anderson Valley Panthers on Thursday, both games at home at 5:30pm. If the Cards seal up two wins, they will post an undefeated season which has not been done since the 2015-16 season when the Cards went 12-0. The Cards are led by possibly one of the most gifted and athletic player to play on the coast, Stevie Lundquist. Lundquist is a sophomore player who is a guard but plays like a super confident power forward. Lundquist is currently leading the NCL III is five categories; scoring (31.4 ppg), rebounding (8.6 rpg), assists (6.2 apg), steals (8.4 spg), and blocks (1.8 bpg). “There is no one in the league that can stop her. She lives and breathes basketball and her passion and love for the game shines through at every game….we are so blessed to have her on this team, she’s only a sophomore!”, stated head coach Jennifer Saunders. Coach Saunders went on to say how lucky Mendo is to have such a knowledgable athlete as their core player because the incoming freshman have been able to rise in their skills and talent playing daily with Lundquist. The next three years look so bright for the program as the team is consistently improving rapidly each day.
If the Cards can get the big wins this week, it is likely they will host the first playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 16th, as the seeding meeting takes place this Sunday afternoon when the league play comes to an end this coming week.

The 2021-22 Mendocino Cardinals also fill in the 2021 Vern Piver Basketball Classic this past week because two teams were a "no show" for weather and Covid related protocols. The Cardinals had two great games witht he first one against the Fort Bragg junior varsity team also filling in. The Cardinals played super tough against the young Wolves for 32 minutes never letting up, scoring 74 points with junior point guard, Sunny Varisano lighting it up for 44 of his own. Varisano was smooth, hitting the outside "J", as well as attacking the rim at will. THe Cardinals advanced to the Consolation round with a score of 74-46 against the Wolves. Next up, the Cardinals faced Making Waves from Richmond, a tall and talented team from the bay. Making Waves could not handle the speed and tenacity of the Cardinals especially young guard, Yoel Ephraim who hunted down the offense with his intense defense, gathering steals which led to layups. Sophomore forward, Jack Wilson, set awesome screens and used his body to board and make room for the Cardinals to score. Sophomore, Dylan Zeramby was also an awesome force in the two games, stealing the ball many times with his lengthy body and making wise decisions on the court advancing the ball. The Cardinals beat Making Waves 48-39 and brought home the Consolation trophy. Yoel Ephraim and Sunny Varisano received all-tourney selections for the Ver Piver Classic! The Cardinals will face the Laytonville Warriors this coming Tuesday at home, 7pm, as they enter league play!

An unbelievable moment in high school sports occurred this week in the Annual Fort Bragg Timberwolves Vern Piver Basketball Classic. The Mendocino Cardinals replaced the Covelo Mustangs in the tourney bracket as the Mustangs could not make it over the hill due to massive snowfall so the Wolves asked the Cardinals to fill. The young Cardinals, three freshman, two sophomores and one junior entered the bracket willingly even though their numbers were down. Incredibly, with the Wolves squad deep, with 7 on the bench, the Cardinals lost to the powerhouse 45-33. The unbelievable moment in high school sports came in the end when the stats were viewed and the Cardinals sophomore point guard, Stevie Lundquist had 33 points, but those points were the ONLY points scored on the Cardinals side. The Wolves could not stop this little hustler who attacked the rim sufficiently and rebounded well, giving herself the advantage. Coach Saunders noticed the “mental zone” that Lundquist was experiencing and spread the offense, keeping the court open for Lundquist to attack which led to bucket after bucket. The Wolves were undeniably the more experienced and skilled team on the court, but the Cardinals played with incredible spirit and unity, never giving up as a team and played their hearts out until the bitter end. The Wolves went on to take third place with junior guard Maddie Triplett and senior forward, Lucy Hendricks taking home an all-tourney trophy as they defeated the Covelo Mustangs. The Cardinals only played one game as the Mustangs were able to get over the hill for their remaining two games. Both teams will open up this coming week with league pay as the Cardinals face the Laytonville warriors at home on Tuesday and the Wolves will face off against the Middle town Mustangs on Tuesday!

The Mendocino boy’s varsity basketball team made it again to the championship game in the Potter Valley tournament this past weekend, facing off against the Upper Lake Cougars, just like in the 2019 tournament. The Cards seemed to have the upper hand in the first quarter, setting the tempo with a 10-0 mark, however, the Cougars came alive in the second, sparking some energy. The Cougars began shooting the lights out beyond the arc, sending a message that they weren’t going away. In fact, in the third quarter, the Cougars began to show more energy and unity as they worked well as a team looking for the open player. The Cardinals relied too heavily on their two guards, junior, Sunny Varisano and Devon Hawkins, and even though both were in double figures by the end of the night, the Cards lost their inside game. The Cougars stayed consistent and took the championship game 66-50. Junior guard, Sunny Varisano received all-tourney nominations for his double figures in all three games, shooting the lights out for the Cardinals. The Cards will face neighbor opponent, the Fort Bragg Timberwolves this Saturday, Dec. 18th at 500pm at the Mendociono High School.
