Mendocino Cardinals Win NCL III pennant; Lady Cards Complete Undefeated Season for First Time Since 2015-16 Basketball Season
The Mendocino Cardinals high school basketball teams completed their regular season last night facing off with the visiting Anderson Valley Panthers for the last NCL III league game of the year. The Lady Cards were on fire from the get-go, putting on the pressure, moving well on defense, and getting steals, capitalizing on the offensive end, taking an immediate huge lead on the Panthers. All the Lady Cards saw court time and did very well on both ends of the court. Junior power forward, Kaya DeLuca, for the Cardinals ate everyone up in the key, gathering 16 rebounds and scoring 8. DeLuca has become quit the hot outside shooter for the Cardinals as well, making her an even more awesome offensive weapon. Sophomore guard, Mealii Parker-Akau used her tenacity and speed to defend very well and also added 6 points to the 58-36 victory with a few crossover drives to the hoop that were amazing. Junior forward, Ella Casey, also did super well inside the key rebounding solidly and executing put backs. Freshman guard, Sage Starkweather used her conditioned speed to beat the Panthers to the spot, getting courageous steals and getting to the hoop. Finally, the Cards were led by the NCL III leading scorer, rebounder, assist manager, block queen, and steal artist, Sophomore guard/center, Stevie Lundquist, scoring 28 points and ended her regular season with 445 points, well on her way to the 1000-point club even without having a freshman year because of Covid. The NCS division 6 seed meeting will take place this Sunday, Feb. 13th, when the Cards will find out who and where they will play on Wednesday, Feb. 16th in the first round of play-offs. The Lady Cards ended with a 14-5 overall record and a 7-0 NCL III undefeated league season.
On the boys side, The Cardinal boys also took the big win against the visiting Panthers who were scrappy and quite vocal. In the 62-37 victory, Sophomore guard, Dylan Zeramby, took control of the momentum in the second quarter, stealing the ball and then setting up shots for his teammates, ending the night with 7 assists. Zeramby was also super-hot from 3-point land, scoring 9 from the arc and a total of 15 for the victory. NCL III scoring and rebounding leader, junior guard, Sunny Varisano, took flight and laid in many high percentage shots, ending his regular season with 17 points against the Panthers. Varisano has a total of 373 points in this season and helped lead the Cards to a 7-1 league record, and a 14-5 overall record. The boys also will get an automatic birth in the NCS tourney this coming week with results to be posted on Sunday.
It is very likely that the Cardinals will both get a home playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 16th because of their records and game times will be 5:30pm/7:00pm.
