FILMING IS A HAZARDOUS JOB

“Drop it on the ground,” she said…

Apparently Coach Karsen meant the bucket — not Coach Matt.

Coach Matt takes the fall, but like the dedicated cameraman he is, he does his best to KEEP. THE. CAMERA. ON. COACH KARSEN.

Because at REZ, the content doesn’t stop just because the cameraman hits the turf.

No coaches were seriously harmed in the making of this video… just a little pride.

“What’s the ONE thing your coach ALWAYS says?”

We asked our REZ athletes… and apparently, coaches have a few phrases that are living RENT FREE in their heads.

But just repeating the phrase wasn’t enough for some of them…

The voices came out.
The mannerisms came out.

And apparently some of our athletes have been studying their coaches a little TOO closely. 🤣

Coaches… consider this your official performance review!!

And whatever you do… STAY UNTIL THE END.

🚨 ADORABLE-NESS OVERLOAD WARNING! 🚨

We saved some of our smallest REZ athletes for last… and you’re not ready!

CREATE SEPARATION. CREATE WHIP.

Coach Max breaking down the importance of hip-to-shoulder separation while using the Tidal Tank (A training tool made famous by Paul Skenes).

When the lower half begins to rotate while the upper body stays closed, we create separation between the hips and shoulders. That separation allows the body to sequence efficiently and creates a whip-like effect as the upper half follows.

The goal isn’t just to throw harder with your arm, it’s to learn how to use your entire body to create velocity.

The Tidal Tank gives our athletes immediate feedback. If the body gets out of sequence, the water lets you know. When everything works together, you can feel the difference.

Catchers!! Listen up!!!

BLOCK IT. RECOVER. COMPETE.

R. Armstrong and R. Farmer going head-to-head in one of our competitive drills designed to improve lateral blocking behind the dish!

Being a great catcher requires more than just toughness ... it requires ATHLETICISM. Catchers have to be mobile enough to move quickly in either direction, strong enough to control their body through the block, and athletic enough to recover and make the next play.

That’s why we train blocking as a movement, not just a position.

When we add competition, we force our athletes to react, move with intent, and execute under pressure ... just like the game demands.

STABILITY + MOBILITY = BETTER RECEIVING

Coach Matt working with R. Farmer (2030 | HSAA) on building strength and stability in the lower half while focusing on efficient receiving and presentation of each pitch.

For catchers, a strong and stable lower half is the foundation of everything we do behind the dish. When we can control our body from the ground up, we give our glove the freedom to work efficiently without unnecessary movement.

Watch the last few reps as we add pre-pitch motion into the progression. Now we’re taking that strength and stability and adding rhythm which allows R. Farmer to stay athletic, move freely, and adjust to pitches throughout the zone.

The goal is to be stable enough to stay controlled and athletic enough to move!

BALANCE BUILDS CONSISTENCY.

Coach Karsen working with B. Vaughn and E. Stapp on one of the most important pieces of an efficient pitching motion ... balance.

When a pitcher can control her body throughout the entire delivery, everything becomes more repeatable. Better balance leads to better body control, more consistent mechanics, and ultimately a better chance to command the softball.

Velocity matters. Movement matters. But if we can’t consistently control our body through the motion, it becomes much harder to consistently control the ball.

THE DANCE WITH THE BALL - PART 3

Coach Matt working with M. Mathers (2030 | Mabank HS) as we put it all together and continue developing the footwork behind fielding a ground ball.

Now we’re combining both movements to truly build rhythm with the ball ... allowing our feet to move our body into position while keeping the glove arm relaxed and free.

Too often, athletes try to do too much with the glove. Instead, we want the feet doing the work of receiving the ball while the glove arm stays relaxed and simply completes the catch.

Soft hands start with active feet.

That’s why we call it “The Dance with the Ball.” When the feet and glove work together, fielding becomes smoother, more athletic, and more consistent.

THE DANCE WITH THE BALL - PART 2

Coach Matt working with M. Mathers (2030 | Mabank HS) on continuing to develop the footwork behind fielding a ground ball.

Now we’re taking the next step ... using our feet to get our entire body into the proper position to receive the baseball.

Good footwork allows us to move more athletically when working laterally, get our body behind the ball, and ultimately increase our range.

Remember: Our glove catches the ball, but our feet put us in position to make the play.
