False albacore are showing in decent numbers, joining the Bonito that have also arrived in spots. Action should only improve as we head toward September, which is usually the peak month for those two species.

Cool weather in mid to late August often leads to a significant uptick in the fishing. May be a good time to get after it.

MA Division of Marine Fisheries is looking for fishermen to comment on their questionable decision to extend the commercial Striped Bass season into October. With only a small percentage of the quota filled after 6 weeks of fishing it should be obvious to all that we need to protect the few fish that are left, not let them be harvested when they are most vulnerable...during the fall migration. Lest there be any doubt re the severity of the problem, witness the fabled Martha's Vineyard Derby which has removed Striped Bass from their eligible species list in an effort to support conservation of the species. And the Derby is ALL ABOUT Striped Bass. At times it appears that the fisheries decision makers endeavor to wipe out the few bass that are left. Feel free to let them know of your outrage.

There have been good numbers of mostly small bass working the Canal of late. Top water or metals good lure choices and early a.m. best.

As we head into summer, freshwater fishing becomes a great option. While the heat of summer may put the brakes on some of the saltwater action, fish like largemouth bass continue to provide great action... regardless of the temperature!

Livelining mackerel is currently the best bet for scoring a memorable striped bass . As for location, just off the east end of the canal or the entrance to Barnstable Harbor are the best bets.

With the current lack of large striped bass in the world it is good strategy to target the smaller fish, which are still around in decent numbers. They can be a lot of fun when using the right gear....think 6.5 or 7 ft. rod with medium sized reel...and with dawn and dusk being the best times to find them you don't have to stay up all night. Estuaries and inlets are best bets location wise.

Great time of year to go bottom fishing. Black Seabass and Scup are both readily available and very good eating as well. Squid is best bait for Seabass, clams best for Scup.

Cool weather in April often leads to excellent trout fishing in May. Plus... the jumbo, 2+ lb trout are usually put in last which means now is a very good time to hit Peter's Pond.

Heads up...there is now a 3 fish per day limit on bluefish. Hopefully there will soon be enough of them in our area for that limit to matter!

With striped bass on the move it won't be long until they are a good target. With that in mind, remember the new legal limit is 1 fish per day at 28"-35". That said, with the significant depletion of the resource as a whole, catch and release of ALL striped bass is the most responsible choice.
