AACC Statement on the Passing of Dr. Tim Murphy

The American Association of Christian Counselors mourns the loss of our friend and colleague, Dr. Tim Murphy, who passed away at the age of 73.

While many knew Dr. Murphy as a former congressman, we knew him as family. As leader of AACC’s Military Division, he was instrumental in shaping our Military and First Responder Mental Health Coaching program, equipping thousands of caregivers to serve those who serve us. A psychologist and Navy Reserve commander who personally treated wounded warriors, he never stopped advocating for the mental health of active duty service members, veterans, first responders, and their families.

During his time in office as a congressman, he wrote and sponsored the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, landmark legislation that became law in 2016 and expanded access to treatment for individuals living with serious mental illness and the families who love them. He was also the author of The Christ Cure: 10 Biblical Ways to Heal from Trauma, Tragedy, and PTSD, helping people work through trauma with the Hope we have in Christ.

We are grateful for his life, his service, and his friendship. Our prayers are with the Murphy family, and with all who were touched by his remarkable heart for the hurting.

On this Memorial Day, let's take a moment to honor the heroes who gave everything in service to our country.

While today often brings family gatherings and backyard barbecues, let’s keep the true meaning of the day close to our hearts.

Take a moment of silence today to remember the fallen and their families.

Ever feel like the world is suddenly turned up to volume 11?

We all hit that wall where everything—the lights, the noise, the endless notifications—just becomes too much. When overstimulation kicks in, our brains go into survival mode.

But here is the thing: overstimulation looks different for everyone. Some people get quiet and completely shut down. Others get restless, irritable, or snappy. Some just need to escape to a dark room immediately.

Because we all react differently, the most important step we can take is to pause and check ourselves before we react. It is hard in the moment, but taking that deep breath keeps us from taking our sensory overload out on the people around us.

Our loved ones aren't the enemy; our overloaded nervous system is.
