REVISED PREREQUISITES FOR LIFEGUARDING INSTRUCTOR/INSTRUCTOR TRAINER REVIEW COURSE

As of August 24, 2021, the prerequisite to participate in a Lifeguarding Instructor and/or the Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer Review course has been revised to include Lifeguarding instructors/trainers whose certifications have expired no more than one year.

Extension to Grace Period to Take Lifeguarding Review Course
To better support lifeguards certified in American Red Cross training, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the grace period for completing the Lifeguarding review course will be expanded from up to 30 to up to 120 days after their lifeguarding certification has expired. Expired lifeguards will now have 120 days to complete the review course.

Some lifeguard changes have been instituted. In areas that adopted the 2018 MAHC, aquatics venues that serve alcohol must have lifeguards on duty. Additionally, lifeguards must have personal protective equipment on their persons or rescue tubes. And the new code includes fine-tuning of glare assessment for lifeguard positioning.

The new edition puts in place several changes regarding water quality, lifeguarding, chemical safety, indoor air quality and other aspects of commercial aquatics facilities.

The lifeguard who was on duty while a 5-year-old nearly drowned at Chelsea Piers in Stamford on Aug. 3 was arrested on Wednesday, police said.

It would be unlikely for a grand jury to indict a parent in the accidental drowning of their child.

“It’s different, though, when you talk about a third party, a coach or someone who a parent has left to care for their child,” he said. “That is a different standard for a grand jury.”

“A lifeguard has hours of boredom and moments of trauma.” Most of the time they are scanning/watching and waiting to be called into action. 95 percent of a good lifeguard’s work is preventative and their most important and critical skill is scanning.
