Good Morning, Trenholm Little League Nation!
Yesterday was the start of the second day of the South Carolina Little League District 3 8/9/10 Softball Double Elimination Tournament at Friarsgate Park in Irmo. Trenholm Red played Trenholm Blue at Friarsgate Park for a spot in the District 3 8/9/10 Softball Championship Game. Before the game started, both teams got together to take pictures at home plate.
In its 36 year history, Trenholm Little League has grown from about 250 players in 2013 to over 680 players this season. With that growth over the past 13 years, TLL started having multiple All Star Teams at various levels, which first occurred with their Coach Pitch Baseball All Star Teams Trenholm Blue and Trenholm Red in 2014.
During the past 12 years, it has always been the case that Trenholm Blue is the more experienced team that the younger Trenholm Red teams. And with that experience, that has often resulted in the Trenholm Blue teams winning district titles and advancing to state tournaments, even winning state championships, as the Trenholm Blue Coach Pitch Softball All Stars did last year.
Trenholm Red has had two Coach Pitch Softball All Star Teams advance to state in 2021 and 2025, where both teams won games in State Tournaments. And the Trenholm Red Coach Pitch Baseball team this year won two games in the District 3 Tournament. But the Trenholm Red teams at the higher levels have not historically been as competitive vs the top District 3 teams such as Trenholm Blue or Irmo's best team.
The Trenholm Red Minors Softball team won their first game Friday night in very convincing fashion, defeating Irmo Gold 19-6 smacking 12 hits in the process. Everyone was going to find out on Saturday that the run rule win was no fluke. Trenholm Red was going to show the rest of the District how good they are and your recap writer was there for the battle for Trenholm supremacy!
It was clear in the first inning that we were going to have a pitchers duel as Trenholm Blue’s Claire and Trenholm Red’s Emma Kate faced off. Claire struck out three of the first four batters she faced in the top of the first inning to hold Trenholm Red scoreless. But Emma Kate threw strikes in the bottom of the first inning, which resulted in her defense making three putouts to keep Trenholm Blue off the scoreboard.
In the top of the second inning, Trenholm Red was retired in order on three defensive putouts. In the bottom of the second, Trenholm Blue was retired in order on three defensive putouts. In the top of the third inning, Claire struck out the side.
In the bottom of the third inning, Trenholm Blue’s Stevie smacked a leadoff double. Emma Kate would strike out the next batter. Then Trenholm Blue’s Collin hit a groundball in the hole at shortstop. Trenholm Red’s shortstop went deep in the hole to try to stop the ball, but it bounced off her glove into the grass in short left field. Stevie had held up since she was not forced but took off for third when she saw the ball get deflected. But Lyla recovered and fired to third baseman Jay who put the tag on Stevie for the second out. Emma Kate would strike out the next batter and there was still no score after three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, Claire struck out the first two batters. Then Trenholm Red’s Emerson would hit a groundball that resulted in an error. Emerson would take advantage of the error. With the next batter up, Emerson took second and third on wild pitches. Then with two strikes, another wild pitch resulted in Emerson racing home and just beating the tag to give Trenholm Red a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Emma Kate was still dealing. She retired the first batter on a groundball back to her and then struck out the next batter for the second out. With two outs, Trenholm Blue’s leadoff hitter Margaret came up She smacked a hard ground ball single off the third baseman. With India up, Margaret stole second base on the first pitch. She then stole third base two pitches later. Then on a wild pitch, Margaret raced home. The catcher for Trenholm Red, Emmie K quickly got the ball and was waiting for Margaret at home. Margaret slid into Emmie’s tag which resulted in the ball being knocked out of Emmie’s glove. Margaret tagged home and was safe! The game was now tied at one.
India would eventually walk. With Claire up, India stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch. Claire smacked a single to shortstop. With Eleanor up, Claire stole second base. Then Eleanor hit a pop up that resulted in an error, scoring Claire. Eleanor ended up at second base. Then Trenholm Blue’s Emmie C smoked a hard ground ball single into centerfield scoring Eleanor. Trenholm Blue scored four runs with two outs and no one on to take a 4-1 lead after four innings.
But this Trenholm Red team refused to go away quietly. Lyla started the top of the fifth inning with a hard groundball single to center field. With Emmie K up, Lyla stole second base. Then Emmie K hit a fly ball single to right field. Emmie would end up on second on the throw and Trenholm Red now had the tying run at the plate with runners on second and third with no out. After a strikeout, Lyerly smacked a single to shortstop scoring Lyla. Emmie K held up at second the play. Trenholm Red’s Jean moved the runners over to second and third on a groundout. Trenholm Red now had the tying runners in scoring position. But Claire left them stranded by striking out the next batter to end the rally and the score was now 4-2.
in the bottom of the fifth inning, Annabelle led off with a fly ball single to short right field. With Stevie up, Annabelle advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. Stevie then smacked her second hit of the game, a hard groundball to shortstop to score Annabelle to give Trenholm Red a 5-2 lead. It looked like Trenholm Blue was going to have a big inning. Trenholm Blue’s Fiona then crushed a line drive. But it was right at the shortstop Lyla who made the nice catch. Lyla then launched a missile of a throw to first base to double off Stevie for the second time she threw out Stevie in the game. Emma Kate would retire the next batter on a groundout to second base to end the fifth inning.
