Milk is the most expensive thing a doe's body makes all spring. Whatever she's eating gets converted straight into it, and the quality of that diet determines whether her fawns thrive or just survive.
Late gestation and nursing pull more out of a doe nutritionally than almost anything else she does all year. Her body is mobilizing minerals from her own skeleton to fuel milk production, the same way bucks pull minerals for antler growth. If the diet she's working with is thin, that mineral and protein drain has to come from somewhere, and her own body condition is often what pays for it.
This is also where dominance matters more than people realize. The healthiest doe family groups control the best food, water and bedding on a property. That access translates directly into earlier births, richer milk and faster-growing fawns. Subordinate does working lower-quality forage on the edges aren't just thinner themselves — their milk output reflects it, and their fawns show up smaller and slower to develop.
If you want bigger, healthier fawns by fall, the work happens in spring. Quality forage available when does need it most isn't a luxury planting. It's the difference between a fawn crop that thrives and one that just gets by.
