We started the day early by getting on the bus and traveling to Julliaca. On the way to the airport, we stopped at an archaeological site called Sillustani. Here we saw ancient burial tombs and was accompanied on our journey by a sweet friendly dog. From there we continued on toward the airport and stopped at a small village where they showed us how they keep potatoes for winter and A method of herding sheep. We also visited with a few llamas. After an airplane ride to Lima we had lunch and stopped at the beach and the mall. After a late dinner, we went back to the airport to board our flight home. I think everyone has had a good time, but we are all ready to be home.

Hey this is Tux posting! Peru has been super fun! Yesterday, Carson and I got up at 5:15 (a little late, I know). We were out running on the streets of Puno by 5:30. The city was mostly empty besides a few people walking around. It was amazing to be able to see the city just like a regular citizen would, and running at over 12,000 feet was pretty cool too! The last pictures of us running up the hill were scary. I rested my phone on a post on the side of the street and then we took off running with the phone recording. The last couple pictures show us desperately running back down the hill to make sure my phone was still there! On Sunday Carson and I ran a mile and half around Ollantaytambo before we hiked Machu Picchu. The hills in Ollantaytambo were ridiculous and my watch told me we had an elevation gain of 160 feet. With the run and hiking Machu Picchu, we took about 25,000 steps on Sunday. We just wanted to share some of the things we are doing that aren't planned by EF :)

Wednesday was an amazing day. We started at Lake Titicaca. After boarding our boat, we visited the floating islands where the Uros people live. They showed us how they make their islands. They showed us their crafts and the kids dressed up in their traditional clothing. We learned about their rituals and traditions. From there we took an hour and a half boat ride to get to the island of Taquile. We had lunch on the island. We hiked up to the top to the marketplace and got to witness some traditional musician playing and dancing. After this, we headed backdown the mountain and re-boarded our boat to head back to Puno. Dinner was at the hotel, and afterwards several of us walked down the street for some last-minute shopping. It was a very interesting day, and I believe everyone had a good time.

On Tuesday we mostly travelled by bus to get to Puno. However, we did make a few stops along the way. We stopped to see a woman making bread and then stopped at another temple ruin. It was another interesting stop. After that we travelled a long distance and eventually stopped for lunch where Tux had a cup of Kopi Luwak, "the most expensive coffee in the world." I like to call it monkey-poop coffee. We travelled through the country headed toward Puno. After going through Juliaca (which was sketchy), we finally arrived in Puno. We had an alpaca dinner at the hotel it was a long day, made longer by the 13,000 feet elevation.

Guinea pig, or cuy as the Peruvians call it, was an interesting dish.

We started the day with the climb up Ollantaytambo. This ancient Incan temple was breathtaking with its height and ability to stand through the centuries. The Incas were truly an impressive people. From there we went to watch a woman make chicha in the traditional manner of the Incas. We got to taste the chicha both before and after the addition of fruits and spices. After that we made an amazing trip to a world-famous pottery maker's studio, the Seminario Ceramic Studio. We got lucky and the artist, Pablo Seminario, and his wife Marilú Behar were both there. We were able to speak to both of them. Pablo was so interesting. He has work on display in Chicago and is a guest lecturer for several colleges and universities. After the pottery studio, we headed to the market in Pisac. There were so many vendors it was impossible to see it all.
After this, we traveled back to Cusco to sample guinea pig, or cuy, as it's known locally. Then we went to our hotel so that everyone could clean up and dinner followed. It was a great day for everyone, I think.

Sunday we went to Machu Picchu. My Fitbit tells me I went up 181 flights of stairs. I didn't go to the very top. However, many students did. McKenna had 270 something flights. To get there, we traveled by train. And to get back we returned by train. We spent most of the day at Machu Picchu and had dinner at the bottom at a restaurant called Full House. The kids sat around outside of the hotel and talked during the evening. Overall it was an amazing day filled with beautiful sites.

We had a busy day today. We were up and headed to the airport by 20 after six. We flew from Lima to Cusco. Once we arrived in Cusco, we visited Saqsaywaman, an ancient Incan temple. From there we went To the Cusco Cathedral. It was beautiful. We ate lunch at Nuna Raymi where many of our kids ate alpaca kabobs. From there we went to the best place of the day: Away. Here we got to see women weaving on looms in the ancient Incan tradition. I think we personally kept them in business for the next year. I think everyone purchased items to wear and bring home. After this we traveled to our hotel and had dinner.
