🌟 Celebrating 31 Years as a HapKiDo Black Belt! 🌟

On November 18, I mark my Black Belt Anniversary—a milestone that began back in 1990 when I first stepped onto the mat under the guidance of GrandMaster Choe and Instructor Lynch. Earning my black belt in 1994 wasn’t just a rank; it was the moment my life truly transformed.

HapKiDo didn’t just teach me kicks and joint locks—it built the foundation for everything I cherish today:

✅ Family & Lifelong Friends – The academy became my second home, filled with brothers and sisters who’ve stood by me through every chapter of life.
✅ Career Success – The discipline, leadership, and resilience I developed on the mat became the blueprint for my professional journey.
✅ Personal Growth – Every grueling test, every early morning class, every moment of doubt pushed me to grow stronger, smarter, and more confident.
It was hard. It was challenging. But it was also fun, rewarding, and deeply fulfilling.

To GrandMaster Choe and Instructor Lynch—thank you for believing in me, pushing me, and showing me what true mastery looks like. 🙏
To every training partner who bled, laughed, and grew with me—you are my family.

Here’s to 31 years of black belt living—and many more to come. 🥋💪

"The ones with whom he should associate are those who are helpful, who are willing to share happiness as well as sufferings. Who give good advice and have a sympathetic heart.

A true friend, the one with whom a man can safely associate, will always stick closley to the right way. Will worry secretly about his friends well fare. Will console him in misfortune. Will offer him a helping hand when he needs it. Will keep his secrets and will always give him good advice.

It is very difficult to find a friend like this, and therefore one should try very hard to be a friend like this. As the sun warms the fruitful earth, so a good friend shines in society because of his good deeds. "

Are you good at accepting responsibility for your mistakes or misjudgments.

Look back and see how many times have you apologized and to whom, you’re probably missing a couple.

Acceptance, Responsibility and Apologies are part of growth.

I am sure you can look at the five people that you spend the most time with or are influenced most by, how much responsibility do they take?

Usually the ones that grow the most and are true leaders, quickly accept responsibility, and they are usually the ones with the highest developed emotional intelligence. Typically they are good at apologizing.

I recommend looking at things in your life considering if you could have or should have done one or all three of these things and didn’t. Usually that part of your life is still out of balance.

So much of your life is determined by your upbringing. How much happiness or sadness, how much joy or depression is largely effected by how you see or think about the happenings of your life. Does life happen to you or for you? It has been said that this is the most influential question one can ask to understand themselves and their own life experiences. Ultimately your view on this is greatly shaped by the culture you were raised in. Did your parents, family and close friends think life happened to them “Victim Mentality” or think life was happening for them “Opportunistic Mentality”? Maybe a combination of both is common but which parent did you look up to the most… Victim or Opportunitic? Did they look for conspiracy and have pessimistic thoughts, waiting for something bad to happen, did or do they deal with depression? Or did they think optimisticly and look for and expect the good, did they have fun and live joyfully?

Controlling your thoughts and emotions are difficult. It is important to realize that there is grass on both sides and the side you water the most will grow the most. Then it will get the most attention and will be where you habitually look the most often. One sure way to keep the negative side strong is to keep watering it. Once you catch yourself watering the negative side, stop and then go and water the other side. Keep yourself busy and doing healthy things, then you will naturally water the opportunity side. This can be done through Martial Arts or kickboxing training and is a great benefit to the our members. Consider trying a class, it could quite literally change your life.

Happiness, Free-time and Depression

I think there has been a lot of miss understanding about the correlation between free-time and happiness. I also think the connection between free-time and depression is not spoken about often enough.

If you are a high performer then free-time will allow you to rest and recharge because you are a high performer it is needed and leads to increased happiness. It will allow you a healthy recharge of your internal battery. This may be needed often depending on your performance level.

If you are not a high performer. If you do the minimum required or close to it. If you are a clock watcher at work. If you don’t get positive results from massive action, then you are not a high performer. If this is you and you have a lot of free-time you will over charge your battery often. Damaging the battery and shortening its charge time and life span. Then when you need a quick response the battery won’t have the juice to supply the energy and it will run dead when you still need it’s energy.

This free-time, laziness, exhaustion and weakened battery can easily lead to depression. Bad moods and feeling down moods can arise easier in this state.

You feel bad about yourself consciously or subconsciously. You know you should be doing something differently. So much of our self worth comes from our personal integrity, we know what we are capable of and we know what we are doing when no one is watching.

Our self-esteem increases and improves as we have more successes in our lives or as we build up more wins in our lives. Whether that is feeling like a good parent by being present and focused and truly doing a good job with your children or being most excellent in your relationship or reaching the highest levels of your career.

If you feel depressed sometimes, if you are in a bad mood sometimes, if you feel less than you could be, you may consider kicking it up a gear and see how that change things. Maybe try putting in more time, putting in more hours, putting in the more awareness, putting in more energy, putting in more effort.

Walking the path of life.

It is impossible to walk two paths at the same time.

It is also not recommended while walking on one path to look over at the other.

Looking over at another path may cause you to lose your direction or trip along the path.

The grass is greener where you water it.

Focus on what you are doing.

For most of my life I have been walking the path of a martial arts instructor and for many years in the beginning, I had to learn how to walk that path while working other jobs, because I hadn’t yet built the business to the point to financially sustain myself.

There were also years in the beginning where I had to work 12+ hours daily to grow my business to the point I needed it to be.

While walking the path of a martial arts instructor, I also wanted to be a good husband, a good father, a good son, a good brother, a good friend and good at whatever job that I was also working.

I had to find out how to be able to do all of those things well and within the path of a martial arts instructor.
