Nobody posts the photos where they get dismantled.

This photo cost me months of prep, a brutal weight cut, a bruised ego, and a long, quiet trip home. But as adults, we spend so much energy trying to avoid looking foolish that we forget how growth actually works.

In jiu-jitsu ...and in everyday life..you don't get to skip the part where you're bad at something. You have to learn to embrace the suck. Losing isn't proof you don't belong; it's just the tuition you pay to get better.

Tomorrow, Professor Brian Edwards steps onto the mats at the IBJJF Masters World Championships. 🌎🥋

Big congratulations to Jo on earning his brown belt! 🥋

Personally, Jo is one of my toughest rounds in the gym. Between the wrestling and those absolutely brutal calf slicers, I’ve had plenty of reminders that this guy is no easy round.

But what makes this promotion even more special is everything Jo brings to the gym outside of the mats. He’s always willing to step up and cover a class when we need him, trying to bring new people through the doors, and is always willing to help someone who is brand new and trying to figure this whole Jiu-Jitsu thing out.

That kind of person is a huge part of what makes a gym what it is.

Thanks for all you do, Jo. You’ve more than earned this one.
