Somatic Coaching

Somatic Coaching Just like in all of nature, our innate wholeness wants us to realize it. More joy and aliveness are possible in a relatively short period of time!

Healing is in large part a matter of removing the obstacles to this process by releasing trauma and connecting the dots in one’s life. My goal is to help facilitate this process safely with therapeutic skill, compassion and presence. My primary approach is through the bio-lateral techniques of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting. The use of bio-lateral sound and

sensations helps take the linear mind off line and allows the body to “think”. It is this ‘body-mind” that stores experience that, if unprocessed, can result in repeated patterns, ‘stuckness", and even physical illness. Accessing the wisdom of the body-mind is the quickest path toward release and new perspective that actually rewires the brain. I have worked successfully with adults across the lifespan with a variety of issues:

Relational trauma, generational trauma and PTSD
Aging and other life stage transitions
Illness and pain issues
Anxiety and depression
Grief and loss
Career path and performance enhancement

The aching discrepancy between what the mind understands and what the body can actually tolerate.

The gap between intellectual understanding of our internal processes and our actual bodily integration is an important one, but it is rarelt talked about.

Marion Woodman captured a universal friction here in this passage from her book 'Bone: Dying Into Life' (2001).

It is entirely possible, even common in deep analysis, for our intellectual insight to skyrocket ahead, while our somatic, physical self lags behind, anchored to the familiar architecture of old defenses.

The mind can shift in a flash of lightning. An insight arrives, a pattern becomes conscious, and we think, “Ah, I see it now. I am therefore free."

But it doesn't happen that fast for the body.

The body does not speak the language of intellect; it speaks the language of regulated tissue, nervous system pathways, and deeply grooved survival strategies that were utilized for years if not decades.

The body is inherently conservative: it holds onto old eating patterns, codependent people-pleasing, or hyper-vigilance because those patterns kept us alive in the past.

Woodman’s final admission- "I know this is true, but I have to keep saying it to myself" feels incredibly validating.
It reminds us that honoring the slow, sometimes frustrating pace of the body is a daily, conscious discipline.

It is an act of deep compassion toward the "Volkswagen chassis" that is doing its absolute best to carry the immense energy of transformation.

Integrating intellectual insights into our lived, bodily reality requires a fundamental shift in how we relate to knowledge.
An insight is merely a map; integration is walking the actual path and terrain.
If the intellect has run far ahead of the body, the path down into the cells cannot be forced through more thinking.
It happens through slow, deliberate somatic choices.

Marion continues:

"I am trying to be as faithful as possible to my own evolving process. Sometimes my process is radically out of balance—my spiritual knowing is far beyond my body’s capacity to incarnate it.

Body is much slower to give up the past—old fears of not pleasing others, old eating patterns, old patterns of relationship.
I have a Jaguar engine in a Volkswagen chassis.

The images that come from my spiritual womb hold the energy that can destroy or heal.

They hold the transformative power that connects body, soul, and spirit. Internalizing the images, breathing, dancing, writing them into my body, giving them time to radiate my cells with new energy—that is healing.
I know this is true, but I have to keep saying it to myself."

Profound observations on healing through attuning to the nervous system.

Our Nervous System - a Messenger of Universal Law

The nervous system, I believe, is a messenger of universal law by which I refer to the timeless source of consciousness development. Revealed in the perennial wisdom traditions, universal law protects the sacred nature of life — and the source of life as such.

Universal law permits us to restore the flow of conscious awareness and to form healthy, ethically developed lives and sustainable cultures. Wherever the law has been broken, the precise location of the break in the nervous system (cosmic address) becomes blocked or constricted, and higher energy is less able to pour into and through that part of the nervous system without blocks or interruption.

The biographical material related to the breakage becomes dissociated, and over time the natural function of the region may become suppressed and downregulated. Development may become frozen or blocked.

For therapists and healers, the power of attunement through the energetic nervous system is the ability to sense and connect with our clients at the precise cosmic address or space-time location of an early or erstwhile wound, conscious or unconscious.

The body is the portal to the inner images.

The body is the portal to the inner images.

“The initial question to be directed to the invisible world would be: "Who or what has come alive in [me]? Who or what has entered my psychic life and created disturbances and wants to be heard?" To this you should add: "Let it speak!" Then switch off your noisy consciousness and listen quietly inwards and look at the images that appear before your inner eye, or hearken to the words which the muscles of your speech apparatus are trying to form. Write down what then comes without criticism. Images should be drawn or painted assiduously no matter whether you can do it or not.
Once you have got at least fragments of these contents, then you may meditate on them -afterwards-. Don't criticize anything away! If any questions arise, put them to the unconscious again the next day. Don't be content with your own explanations no matter how intelligent they are. Remember that your health is seriously at stake, and that the unconscious has an unknown and far-reaching control over it. Treat any drawing the same way. Meditate on them afterwards and every day go on developing what is unsatisfactory about them. The important thing is to let the unconscious take the lead. You must always be convinced that you have mere after-knowledge and nothing else. In this case the unconscious really does know better.”
