Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.

Welcome to History Wednesdays. Over the next few weeks, we are pulling back the curtain on the lineage, the mentorship, and the master gunsmiths who paved the way for what we do today. The Hayes Custom Cobra didn’t just appear out of thin air—it is built upon the foundational knowledge of the giants who came before us.

To kick off the series, we are throwing it back to the beginning: the 1950s.

James E. Clark Sr., considered one of the founding fathers of 1911 gunsmithing, opens Clark Custom Guns in Shreveport, LA. Clark Custom Guns quickly became known for guns that win, being built by shooters that win. There is no mistaking the real deal. Innovations and techniques still used today were developed in the Clark shop over the years. James Clark Sr. is responsible for the creation of some of the most iconic 1911 innovations, such as the ramped 1911 barrel, the six-inch long slide, threaded cone compensators, and machine checkering on the front strap, to name a few.
