I would like to share some very special news. On September 11th, two Grand Masters whom I deeply respect were promoted to the rank of 9th Dan in Taekwondo—a rank that typically requires a minimum of 45 to 50 years of training.
On the left is Grand Master Woo S*k Lee. (From China and Korea) He is my mentor and the founder of JSK. He opened the JSK school in my hometown in 1989, which is when I first enrolled. Over the course of about ten years, I learned invaluable Taekwondo knowledge and techniques from him, as well as the essential qualities of a true Taekwondo practitioner. Naturally, there were many challenges during that decade—such as training six days a week and early morning sessions starting at 6:00 AM—but I persevered through them all. He also played a pivotal role during a time when I had lost my way, helping me return to the right path.
Later, I went to college and served in the military. After arriving in the United States in 2003, I met Grand Master Soon Kil Jang(USA)(pictured on the right). He guided me toward a career teaching Taekwondo in the U.S., and we have maintained a close relationship ever since. He taught me a great deal about leadership and business management, and I strive to emulate his best qualities.
These two Grand Masters did not know each other previously. They each underwent their own 9th Dan promotion evaluations; while sharing news with me, we realized their special promotion ceremonies were scheduled for the same time. I introduced them to one another, and they were able to meet in person in Korea.
I sincerely hope that all JSK members encounter truly precious and important people in their lives. Such individuals will undoubtedly have a profound impact on us, which is why relationships are so vital. Throughout my own journey of learning and training in Taekwondo, I, too, have met countless coaches and mentors. And having met these two individuals, I can now confidently say that I teach a great number of students at JSK.
If the opportunity arises in the future, I would love to invite them both.
