A fairly long-time horse friend just asked me about my horse and I was finally ready to reveal the struggles from 2025.
Last year poor Lenny contracted 2 heavy hitting infections- both neurological Lyme and EPM.
No doubt they were manifesting for a good part of the year until their critical juncture in the Fall.
Even when I *knew* something had to be wrong and had “a vet” check him an unfortunate lapse of protocol led to a 10 day delay in -any- treatment and diagnosis. Those were terrible days and the following months left me dejected as the disease rendered him a different animal for some time, both physically and behaviorally; his essence being altered.

Under a very diligent and responsive “different vet” and with supportive information/follow up by my “regular vet” he then received complete treatment, care and support. A change in husbandry this spring served to catalyze the final stage of healing. Today, in true Lenny fashion, he seems happy-go-lucky and engaged. 💛
So, so, so many people helped with their supportive words and anecdotal information regarding both these diseases. Sharing their experiences helped me come to a good treatment and recovery plan, the culmination of which is laser focus on the health and well being of his immune system.

I am not sure what is in the cards for us in regards to dressage, and those that know me know I value day to day experience and training /way/ over competitive endeavors…but rest assured the banana 🍌 loving Spanish guy is back🥰

It was a pretty “Summer” ☀️🕶️day judging for the Lehigh Valley Dressage Association at Sterling Hill Stables in New Tripoli, PA.
Two rings ran a full day with judging of a variety of pairs Intro through Fourth Level, including Musical Freestyle, DSE and an FEI JR.
My scribe for the day, Deb Y., made it fun and easy and the show was very well run with plenty of volunteers, office crew and a fancy snack/lunch stand.

LVDA is a USDF Group Member Organization and has a full schedule of shows during the season, educational activities, social functions, awards and more!

This weekend saw two shows judged..
Saturday I judged a morning dressage schooling show at Four Farthing Farm- where competitors each had 10 minutes for their ride- plenty of time to get some extra time for, generally, their first outing of the year. Tests were from Intro A to Third level; the weather was cool but the day pretty and the smiles were all around! Lori had beautiful ribbons and special thanks goes to scribe Judy.

Sunday was a 💨blustery NJ Regional Pony Club Dressage Rally at USET Foundation Inc. Riders filled 4 rings, 2 in the main arena and 2 in the North Field and the kids competed as either qualifying or non qualifying and as teams with jog and horse management requirements. Even a few adult Pony Clubbers participated! The show ran well and I am amazed at the collaborative efforts to conduct this complex offering! Brita and her crew are simply the best! 🤩

A late April Combined Test at Bucks County Horse Park opened up their schooling season. The competitors were well prepared and I had some very lovely 🥰tests at Intro, Starter, BN and Novice. The XC course was open and many took the opportunity to school after.
Scribe Nancy K. was excellent, of course, and we had some time to catch up. Maureen and Allison ran a smooth show, as always. 👍

A chock- full day judging for Somerset Hills Pony Club at their 1st Annual Shaggy Horse benefit show- to help with the costs of attending Nationals. Local riders filled 2 rings with ~100 rides on the pretty Spring day- albeit a bit breezy for my hat 🤠Scribes Ashley S. and Suzanne R. made it easy and fun and the rest of the volunteer crew ran a smooth show. Everyone I saw was smiles and reported having a great day and the Danish % system was used to award the tests.

Judged my “Season Opener“ at Centenary‘s IDA where 5 college teams from the region wrapped up their season - catch riding at 1st, Upper Training, Lower Training and Introductory levels- riding a test and/or Dressage Seat Equitation ride. The girls were fantastic and the horses amazing! Centenary staff, students and volunteers ran a wonderful show- shout out to scribes Laura and Olivia for making my job easy and fun!

It’s mid February and we are in the throes of winter here in the Mid Atlantic.
What, to start, seemed like a beautiful white winter has persisted (with intermittent thawing and refreezing) to a frozen, slippery mess. Most horses are standing in small areas eating hay in turnout. Manure has become part of the crust.

There is not a lot of warmth or free movement by either the horses or their care-givers and riders. While indoor arenas or cleared outdoor tracks provides places to ride I liken the feel to working with cold Playdough.
The blankets themselves, though providing warmth to horses, can feel heavy and constricting. It’s hard for the horses to relax for grooming and groomer’s hands get cold. Muscles and tendons/ligaments are bound and tight in both horse and rider.

I like to begin an indoor workout with in-hand walking and some in-hand maneuvers. Before the girth is fully tightened I pull each front leg up and out.
Hind legs can be flexed upwards. I might walk a bit and then in each corner ask for a turn around the forehand. Having a whip can be helpful to touch the horses legs and make them aware of the step and cross. Make sure it’s not a pivot around the middle. Rein back is also wonderful- make sure the neck can lower and the abs lift, and the rein back steps should be diagonal pairs. You can touch the horse between the front legs by the girth or even a bit further back to help engage the abs to lift upwards towards the spine.
I then might ask for turns around the haunches and a touch on the shoulder or rib cage or even outside leg helps them curve and step. Watch the positioning of the neck here…you may need to pause and then help them lower and move their neck to the correct positioning.
The culminating of this in-hand work is the half pass. The shoulder should be leading but all legs should be reaching over sidewards as they step. It takes a lot of coordination and you must look to see what part your horse might struggle with or incorrectly position out of place. Each direction will be different.
Now you are ready to get on…..
(Or take the next month or two to just do in-hand work)

Bonus- doing this type of work is transformational for your partnership with your horse. It’s a very close and even status type of work. Not only does your horse have to be coordinated and clear you do too. You are literally eye to eye and there is no cheating here- you will be looked at and judged by your horse. You can’t just kick and push harder and think the horse is lacking response to your ask. You will develop an immense appreciation at correctness and timing of your aids and see the difference in understanding by your horse.
A well trained horse did not get that way by accident, they got there by being trained by a well training rider.
