A beautiful historic promotion from our friends Polecats Vintage Base Ball Club - feat. The Hamden Nine! It was a great couple matches!! The M.A.C. plated 6 runs with two outs in the bottom of the 8th to rally forward to a 21-20 victory in game one, while the Hamdenites stormed back in game two for an 8-4 win in 7 innings to split the twin-bill! https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18xYkPg7aA/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Though we may play by the rules of 162 years past, we must needs use the tools of today to spread the word....... forgive us our trespass, o ye vintage base ball gods, as we too succumb to the lure and ease of Intelligent Artifice...

However, we must also acknowledge, from our viewpoint, nothing matches the craftsmanship of a human (stay tuned for a human-made season-long schedule dropping later this week)

In the bottom of the first, Crutches our perennial backstop for the Club, bunts one off his eye socket (a true sacrifice) and goes to hospital (see shiner in team photo). He would return later to cheer on his comrades… However, the M.A.C. were stifled and defeated by a formidable Westfield Wheelmen by a score of something to something else. 🤷‍♂️ That was the bad news…Now for the good news…

The pre-game ceremony revealed the new M.A.C. history display for the Skene Library; hand-made of ash lumber sawn from a tree in nearby Pine Hill that succumbed to the emerald ash borer. This has been a project two years in the making and we are so grateful to have the help and artistry of Michael Asbill and Ripley Butterfield of . The partnership has brought the trees of our Catskill forests that are being ravaged by invasive pests and pathogens into full view with their thoughtful installations at libraries through out the region. You’ll soon be able to see the display hanging on the wall in Skene Library later this spring.

Game Notes: Liam Hawke Bullock, a local Roxburian made his umpiring debut and wishes to play with the Club and Anthony Cortese, a Fleischmannian played the field and has expressed interest in returning soon as well. MAC Captain from 2008-2011 Jerrod Hubbell made a triumphant return with bride and new baby in tow!

Judson Fabian Kirke, born in Fleischmanns in 1888, was a major league baseball player who wore the jerseys of Boston, Cleveland, Detroit and the NY Giants during the 19-teens. Shown here in 1912, he was a powerful hitter, and, they say, something of a comedian. He married a Louisiana woman and they had three children, the family living with his parents in Middletown in the 1920s and '30s. Come to the Middletown History Center Sunday, Apr. 26 at 2 to hear more about Jay (1888-1968) and other ballplayers in a talk by Collin Miller of the Mountain Athletic Club.
