As many of you have noticed, we've been on a bit of an extended break which started with some health and soundness issues within our herd and has continued through my pregnancy and the birth of Baby Lucy in April ❤️

We are going to continue to take the rest of the year "off" (although we all know there is no off time on a farm 😂) to focus on baby raising and homesteading but we will reevaluate the health and readiness of the herd for lessons in the spring!

Sleepy girl! This is actually really cool! Since she moved into her stall, there has been absolutely no evidence of her laying down in there (for the first week she only wanted to come in for grain, hay she preferred outside - its an in/out stall). But she looks pretty comfy in there now!

Obviously, a little too quickly done (was just trying to point out something to my husband but she could have used more processing time) but her reactions are expressive and positive. This is a mare that has shown an issue having ropes around her sides and behind her. Before I took this video, we did the same thing on the other side, with more processing time, until it was almost a non-issue. But I so wish I didn't cut the video off because she did come back and check in! Do want you to notice, that never did we yank or shut down her movement to get the goal done! I am so looking forward to ride time time with this one!

I have seen quite a bit of posts about anthropomophism lately - and on the surface, I agree, its not great for your horse - calling your horse a jerk, or stubborn, or stupid, or worse, is not only untrue, but will make it so (to you anyway). But I also think anthropomorphic thoughts can be beneficial for a horse - "my horse loves me and takes care of me," will make a human feel a reciprocal need to take care of the horse - "my horse will miss me," or, "it makes my horse happy to see me," makes their human show up. "It will make my horse sad if I don't buy them this at the Equine Affaire," makes their human pay attention to their needs or preferences. "My horse is a jerk," just about always creates a problem - one that was already there that you are putting human thoughts on or one that will turn into a self-fulfilled prophecy.

The more time that goes on, the more I love my homemade stall guards. We almost replaced with gates, but they came in a little too dented to put in a barn. Anyway, they are just 3 chains - the first up with a quick release snap, and the bottom two up with leather strips. If anyone gets a foot through the bottom bit is breakaway, while still leaving a visual barrier up, and if anyone ever manages to get halfway over it, the top chain can be undone easily. Right now the fabric is just a body pillow case 😂 but if anyone has the capabilities to make them out of canvas or another tougher material, I would love to chat to figure out pricing - especially if you are a student or client and would like to trade for lessons or training sessions!
