As I sit here on this beautiful morning, awakened by the early chirpers and the summer breeze rustling the leaves outside my bedroom window, I'm thinking of a way to honor this day. Where I've landed is two-fold. First, I am making a donation to The Equal Justice Initiative. Bryan Stevenson runs this organization and he plays such an important role in our world today. Please go read more about him and his work at eji.org. I'll try to add a link in profile, but it hasn't been working for me for a while.
I'd like to also list a few of my favorite books by black authors today. Maya Angelou has had my heart for years. "And Still I Rise" is my favorite poem. Maya's book "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" is also very close to my heart. Isabella Wilkerson's book "The Warmth of Other Suns" follows folks during the Great Migration. It teaches a history lesson that we don't learn in schools. From the first person perspective, you'll fall in love with the subjects here. I didn't want this book to end. Percival Everett's "James" is perfection. Bryan Stevenson's book "Just Mercy" changed me. Yaa Gyassi's "Homegoing" is a beautifully written and wrenching wrenching book. I have recently begun working my way through James Baldwin. If you're a literature fan, I'd recommend starting with "Giovanni's Room".
