Weekend Recap 🦈

Game 1 vs New England Nightmares
We came out strong and *totally* stayed out of the penalty box the whole game (spoiler: we did not). Newcomers Katie Hildreth and Hannah Seymour made an immediate impact, slowing the pace of the game, controlling breakouts, and looking right at home in teal and orange. Sunshine Reddington and Colleen Schubmehl got us on the board in the 2nd, but a parade to the box left us killing a 5-on-3, which the Nightmares gladly used to tie it up. Luckily Sunshine and Schubs connected off a beautiful breakout from KG in the 3rd to lock up the win (👀 that group hug celly 🧡). And in true Makos fashion, KG took one last trip to the box with five seconds left—just to keep it interesting—as we secured our first W of the season.

Game 2 vs East Coast Queens
This one was a grind. After a second-period Queens goal, Schubs tied it up in the 3rd off some crisp passing from Sunshine, Dom Berube, and Katie Hildreth. We pushed hard, nearly stole it, and then… didn’t. The Queens capitalized with just over a minute to go, handing us a tough 2-1 loss. But hey—we played a clean game with zero penalties! We’re calling that growth.

Overall takeaways:
Chemistry? Building. ✅
Lines? Locked in. 🎯
Uniforms? Poppin’. 🔥

Big thanks to Gwen Vance for the game day shots! on Sunday, June 1st at 8am and 12pm!

Opening weekend recap: Sharks live in water, but this rain was a bit much. It was raw. It was damp. It was gross. Still, the Makos hit the rink for our first two games of the National Ball Hockey League season!

Game 1️⃣ vs New England Valkyries:
Our season opener was a goalie duel for the ages. Kirsten DiCicco stood on her head for the Makos—but so did Brook Wolejko for the Valkyries. After a scoreless OT, the shootout stretched to... 9 rounds? 10? 27? We honestly lost count somewhere around “still tied.” Sophie Schuster came close a couple times, but in the end it was Emily McGrath who found the back of the net for the Valkyries.

Game 2️⃣ vs Watatic Wild:
With first game jitters and learning everyone's names out of the way, the Makos played a much cleaner second game—though not the result we wanted. The Wild netted two goals (let’s not toss around words like spectacular), while our offense peppered Sonjia Shelly all game. We couldn’t crack her until late in the third, when strategic mastermind Jess Busch called for the goalie pull and Sophie Schuster cashed in to score the first Makos goal of the season.

(And there may have been a spirited but *polite* discussion in the Wheeler household over whether a Makos goal was missed by an NBHL Womens MA official whose name rhymes with “Ick.”)

Not the outcomes we wanted, but the vibes were high and the chemistry is building!

on May 18. Preferably in dryer conditions. 🤞
