Willkommen zum Fischer am Freitagen

As stated previously, Fischer Hall was built in 1897 and it provided the community an opportunity for entertainment. In the early days, the society would have frequent dances with bands from the neighboring communities. The first event taking place in Fischer Hall was a Fourth of July ball in 1897. Guenther’s Band from Sattler provided the music. The Hall then hosted a dance on October 2, 1897 and a Costume Ball was held February 2, 1898. An Easter ball was held in 1898 with the Bird’s Band performing. The Guenther Band performed again at the May festival Ball on May 28, 1898. The Fischer community also had the Fischer Store Orchestra to entertain local folks. A few other local musicians were Arnold B Fischer, Waldemar Otto Fischer, Herbert Weichmann, Hugo Wunderlich, and Alma Fischer would accompany the band on the piano. The various bands would provide traditional German waltzes and polkas. Overtime, the bands and kind of music would change. The next time you’re in Fischer Hall, take a moment and just listen. We bet you can almost hear the music and shuffling of feet dancing from a bygone era. To be continued …

Willkommen zum Fischer am Freitagen

This weekend Fischer has the honor of hosting the Tri-County Senior Men’s and Women’s 9pin Bowling Tournaments. Once again, we felt this would be a great time to discuss some more history of nine pin bowling. People have been bowling long before the sport was brought to the United States or Texas. Historians believe that bowling has been around for thousands of years in one form or another. Bowling balls and pins have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The Polynesians bowled on lanes 60 feet long, the same length as modern alleys. There is evidence that shows English Kings and monks like Martin Luther once bowled. In the 4th century, bowling was part of a religious ceremony. The belief was that if you could knock down all of the pins, you were thought to be of good character. Those who missed the pins had to do some kind of penance. Although the rules have changed a lot in modern times, I’m sure many people still say a little prayer each time before rolling their bowling ball.
We wish all of the senior men and women good luck as they compete this weekend - just think you are competing in a sport once played by royalty.

In celebration of the upcoming Fall Comal Trophy Bowling Season and the honor that Fischer Bowling Club is the season’s host, we thought this would be the perfect time to talk about the history of nine pin bowling. Nine pin bowling is believed to have originated in Europe from ancient German religious rites and was brought over to the United States. It became the most popular form of bowling in the United States from colonial times until the 1830’s, when several cities/states started to ban 9pin bowling in hopes of curbing gambling, drinking and organized crime. Supposedly, the people of Connecticut just added another pin (the birth of 10 pin) circumventing the ban and introducing ten pin to other states - problem solved. Except in Texas, where by 1837, nine pin alleys were all over the great state. Rather than a ban, the 1st Congress of the Republic of Texas chose to subject the bowling alleys to an annual tax. All forms of bowling have remained legal and subject to taxation in Texas ever since. By the 1950’s, however; most Texas bowling establishments had changed to ten pin lanes due to the introduction of automatic pin setting and scoring. Nine pin remained predominantly popular in the small outlying German communities of Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe counties, because in true German tradition- “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. These bowling clubs still preferred the teamwork and camaraderie of nine pin bowling, and they opted not to change. To this day, the only place you will find nine pin bowling in all of the United States and Texas is in the counties of Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe. They still do not use automatic pin setting or scoring - it is all still done by hand just like our ancestors did it. If you’re ever in the area of a nine pin club, stop in for a bit and watch a game - or better yet, become a member and join a league. By doing so, you will help keep our history and traditions alive for future generations. To be continued….

Congratulations to our Senior Ladies for taking First Place at Comal County Trophy Bowling! They will compete again in a couple weeks at Tri County. Best of Luck Ladies!! We are Fischer!!
