The Exercise Science Center has purchased a Smith Machine, where the bar is counterweighted and slides up and down on guide rods. Jonny P. had a closed head injury nearly 35 years ago, and is very ataxic (uncontrollable spasm and shaking). He always wanted to lift free weights but could not control the bar. With the Smith machine he found it very easy, and I would estimate his max, his first time benching at around 185 lbs. That's what 35 years of training will do for you.

Comparison of two identical Medigraphics Pulmonary Function systems to a Collins 13.5 liter Water-sealed Spirometer. Old school wins hands down with no drift between trials.

In instances where dehydration is suspected, the Exercise Science Center is equipped with a Urine Specific Gravity (USG) meter. Collecting a few drops of urine, we can see how heavy the urine is. Tap water shows a value of 1.0000, and typical values for urine is between 1.0050 and 1.0150. Dehydration makes the urine more concentrated, with values that can exceed 1.0200. Elevated numbers are also seen when the body is eliminating excessive amounts of proteins in the urine, (i.e. heavy exercise, calorie restriction and diabetes}.

Carbon monoxide monitor allows a simple way to see how many percentage points of the oximetry reading is made up of carbon monoxide. A standard oximeter cannot distinguish between oxygen or carbon monoxide molecules attached to the hemoglobin of the red blood cells. Since a normal oxygen saturation reading is 98%, a heavy cigarette smoker may show 6% of his saturation is from carbon monoxide, so his true O2 saturation is 92%.
The Exercise Science Center evaluated a young man who smoked, and cut down trees for a living. All day he had a chain saw exhausting fumes in his face. His carbon monoxide levels were over 12% making him eligible for oxygen through his insurance carrier. Months later he came back to our facility, had quit smoking and showed a 98% saturation.

The Exercise Science Center has medical grade instruments that can precisely evaluate oxygenation of the hemoglobin in the blood. If your red blood cells had 100 slots that could hold oxygen, the oximeter can tell us how many of those slots are filled. A typical value for a healthy individual is 98% oxygen saturation. Lung damage from disease, smoking, environmental toxicity, or more recently the COVID virus, can greatly affect saturation levels. If your oxygen saturation levels drops below 88% at rest, or 85% while exercising or while asleep you would be prescribed supplementary oxygen and be eligible for reimbursement through Medicare. One symptom that can arise is “clubbing”, where the poor oxygenation to the extremities caused a deformation of the fingertips.

Data from the Cybex Leg Extension machine. The weight is on the left axis, and degrees (range of motion) are on the bottom axis. The setting for the ankle pad, (shorter lifters setting 1, larger lifters setting 2) are color coded on the right, A shorter lifter, (setting 1), would be doing nearly 30% more weight: i.e. 63 vs 47 lbs at mid range, even though the weight stack would show the same number of plates. Hence the name varable resistance machine.

Yauger played football and trained at the ESC from 9th grade to his senior of high school. When he joined he was 6' 4.5" and 276 lbs and never done a sport. I told him I was going to make him an athlete not a football player. When he went off to college in 1994, he was a pre-season All-American as a freshman. Ran the mile in 5:52, benched 405, and ran the 40 in 5 flat. He now does marathons. Mission accomplished.
