Great Basin Gun Hawks CFDA Affiliated Club This is the Official page of the Great Basin Gun Hawks, a CFDA Affiliated Club. Our Motto is:
Safety First! Fun Second!

Competition Third

We promote Safe and Proper use of fi****ms for all ages. Our sport has some of the friendliest and nicest people you would ever like to meet, and whom you will be proud to associate with. The Great Basin Gunhawks is an affiliated club of the Cowboy Fast Draw Association. We host club matches, practice sessions and classes to promote Cowboy Fast Draw. It is a great opportunity to

come out and compete in the fastest competitive shooting sport. The current World Championship is 0.295 seconds (that’s two hundred ninety five thousands of a second). Each round is a random draw, so you will compete on an even footing with shooters of all abilities and ages. We hold practice sessions on Monday nights from 6 pm to 8:00 pm. Practice sessions are included in the annual membership of $25 for a single, $10 for each additional family member. The first Monday night of each month is a club match, with a $5 entry fee. The third Saturday of each month is a club match, with a $10 entry fee (includes lunch). Our club has an indoor facility, so weather does not interfere with our activities. We use 1800's period single action .45 caliber six shooters and wax bullets for ammunition. We use pre-1900 style holsters, and dress in late 1800 style and western style clothing. We are the closest club to CFDA Fastest Gun Alive, World Championship, held in Fallon, Nevada. Gunslingers travel to Fallon from around the world to share friendship, participate in the camaraderie and compete in organized competition. We look forward to meeting you and invite you to join our sport.

Quick Cal held a meeting with the members present at our last Saturday Match, the members agreed that they wanted to work on improving their times and Quick Cal offered to help. The following is an amended schedule and all Gun Hawks are invited to join in on this Improvement Program, developed by Quick Cal, who will also be present and available as an Instructor according to the following schedule.

In the meantime, and for the Next 6 Weeks, here are some Practice Tips from Quick Cal:

Step 1: Dry-Firing
Dry-fire every day at least twice a day for just two minutes, morning and evening are recommended. (Lasers are advisable, but not necessary).
You will notice real improvement after the first week and this improvement will continue and become a "sub-conscious muscle memory movement" after about 3 weeks. Your timing will continue to improve through 6 weeks and beyond. After 6 weeks it will become a permanent "sub-conscious muscle memory movement" a.k.a. "Your Natural Draw", that will likely stay with you the rest of your life. It will serve you well in dry-fire areas at matches for years to come.

Step 2: Wax Bullets @ 7'
During this period when you do shoot wax bullets at targets, 3 times a week is best, but once a week will work, and keep fine tuning your draw with certain movements that bring the cone of fire of your "Natural Draw" onto the target. Note: Make sure that you incorporate any added movements into your dry-fire routine.

Step 3: Developing Consistency
When shooting wax bullets @ 7' understand that the actual target is an 8" circle with the top of that circle at the top of the light hole on the target, any shoot going over the light would likely miss @ 15'.
Once you can hit at least 80% of your shots within that 8" circle @ 7', you are ready to move back to 11' until you can hit the 17" target at 80%, then you are then ready to move back to 15'.

Goal: Is to hit 60%+ @ 15', at only 1-2 hundredths of a second slower than you were hitting 80% @ 7'.

Note: If you choose to develop new draws or a "clicks" as I call them in my video "Hit'em Fast" like a pace shot, or a go-to shot, you are advised to go through this entire process again. There is no slow-down or speed-up, there are just different draws using different groups of muscles that must be trained.

Fundamentals Are the Key: Even a great shooter can find themselves in a slump of half-cocking or hitting. Going back to fundamentals are the perfect escape from a slump.

Here is our Gun Hawk Schedule for the Next 6 Weeks:

December
1. This Monday (December 23rd) is our December Monday
Night Match at the Bat Barn.
A new and unique format, developed by Quick Cal called
"Grip It & Rip It" @ 7' Match (Gunfighter Handicap).
Practice & Qualifying: Begins 5:00 p.m. Match: 6:00 p.m.
Regular Nevada 8 Rounds until 8:00 p.m., Shootoffs TBD
by Number of Shooters
2. Monday Practice (December 30th) @7'

What is a Gunfighter Handicap?
Each competitor will shoot 10 shots to find your range of speed at 7', and your "Optimum Shot". The shooter will determine and state their "Optimum Shot", not a safe shot, but an optimum shot. Their Optimum Shot will be written next to their name on scoring sheets. While shooting the actual match, the shooter who is closest to their Optimum Shot wins the shot, in the Nevada 8 Format.

Note: For anyone shooting two hundredths faster than their Optimum Shot, that shot will be considered a miss. However, Shooters will be able change their Optimum Shot between rounds, since times may improve during the match. The reason is not to penalize a shooter, but to encourage the shooter to state their true "Optimum Shot".
