One of the 5 major animals styles used in Hung Gar Kung Fu is the Leopard. It is celebrated for its speed and power. The leopard has shorter legs than other large cats, for a lower center of gravity, giving them stealth and explosive bursts of speed and power. Here is a look at a leopard in action, and you will see why it's so revered!

A beautiful female leopard creeps out of the bush in the early morning on the Masai Mara, Africa, and spots a group of unsuspecting impala and gazelle. Crouc...

It occured to me today that when I'm out of Dit Da Jow (Chinese linament), I use an herb that is found here in the Western States: Arnica is a flower that grows in MO, WY, ID, eastern WA and OR and the northern tip of CA.
You can take Arnica by mouth for sore mouth and throat, or appy it to skin for insect bites, painful and swollen veins near the surface of the skin (superficial phlebitis), chapped lips, dandruff and arthritis. And of course, for you martial artists out there, for bruising, swelling, sprains and muscle pain.
Arnica can be bought in a variety of products such as gels, pills, shampoos, and oils.

When I first begin practicing martial arts, I used to think that a great practice session meant that I had to sweat profusely. I have since had some of my most effective, eye-opening moments in developing form and technique while "messing around." Even if I started a practice very lightly I still made myself practice when I did not really feel like it. And yet! some of my most rigorous training started out by.... messing around. My Sifu, Fred Lee, once told me that building your kung fu is like building a large Brick House and some days you put on 30 bricks and some days you only put on two. No practice in your craft is ever too small.

Gee Sin Sim See was one of the legendary "five elders", survivors of the destruction of the Shaolin Temple by the Qing Dynasty, in the mid-seventeenth century. After escaping the attack on Shaolin, this venerable monk found refuge with the actors of the Red Boat Opera Troupe, where he taught kung Fu to these fellow Ming loyalists. He is linked to several Southern Chinese martial arts, most of which proliferated as underground rebellion systems against the oppressive Qing, including Hung Gar and Wing Chun.
