It has been awhile since the FishDancer Angling team was in action. We haven't fished a tournament since Key West in January. So we decided to jump back in at the Kingbuster. We have fished this event since the late 1990s and decided to take advantage of their three checkout location rules and fish from home this year. At 6:00 AM we met up with the checkout boat just inside the Fernandina Beach jetties, showed our boat number and out in search of pogies we went. Oh I forgot to explain that we also decided to fish 'old school' for this event (catch your own bait and fish local waters)!!!!

Once outside of the St. Mary's inlet we turned North into Georgia and headed to 'the stake' hunting bait. Finding nothing there, we crossed the inlet back into Florida waters and ran the beach of Amelia Island. Travelling about half of the island's 13 miles of beaches we spotted a few pelicans in the water. We pulled up and waited for the bait to surface. We threw the net twice and had more than enough 'turbo' pogies to fish for the day.

We headed to the Nassau Livebottom and set up our trolling pattern. The water was kingfish green and 85 degrees. We fished this area for two hours with no success and decided to push out into 80 feet of water. The water at AH was blue/green and even warmer at 87 degrees, we were hoping that there might be some cooler water down deep. We fish this spot for the rest of the day and got some action with a few small kings (we weighed in a 13.6 pounder), bonita, cuda and several mystery fish that were cut off before we cold see them. But not the one king we were looking for. We fished until 3pm and headed for the scale at Morningstar Marina in Jacksonville on the St. John's River. some 25 miles southeast wanting to beat the crowd to the weigh in.

Once weighed in we decided to run the ditch back to Fernandina. We ran the 25 miles dodging wave runners and boaters who need better training on how to operate their vessels but mostly we were trying to out run an incoming storm setting up just west of Amelia Island Marine. Crossing under the Shave bridge, trough the open railroad trestle and into the entrance channel for the yacht basin was a good feeling. The storm broke on top of as we were tying up and we bot got soaked, but it actually felt good after a long hot day on the water.

While we didn't find the fish we wanted we fished the way we wanted and it felt good to be back out in the ocean fishing. What is next up for us? Who knows. Stay tuned. NANCYDUNBAR
