As an amateur, a professional fighter, and a coach I’ve realized what I’ve enjoyed most about boxing is the people, the experiences we’ve shared, and watching myself and others develop into who we never thought we could become.

The fights are part of my story. But so are the relationships and the lessons I now get to pass on.

A young boxer doesn’t always need a way to improve performance. Sometimes they need someone to recognize that their problem is really doubt. Someone who knows when to challenge them, when to slow down and listen, and when to remind them how far they’ve come.

That moment can be the difference between a kid walking away believing “I’m not good at this” and giving themselves another chance to push through.

That’s the responsibility I take seriously and hold my value to.

I take people with no experience and teach them how to box. But while we’re developing their stance, footwork, and defense, we’re also working on patience, discipline, composure, and confidence in themselves. The lessons that matter long after the gloves come off.

Some of the people I train have been with me for five to ten years. You don’t build those relationships through workouts alone. You build them by paying attention, being consistent, and caring about the person not just their performance.

To me, being a boxing coach means more than mastering the techniques. It means understanding how to teach them to different people, recognizing what each person needs, and continuing to learn yourself.

It means being a teacher and a mentor, not just someone telling people what to do.

These highlights show what I’ve done in boxing. The people I’ve helped develop show why I’m still here.

Catching a jab and sliding back from the power hand is the simplest and most effective form of defending punches. I tell my boxers to be a closed door, not an open window.

When your hands separate and your shoulders square up, you leave an opening. Close the door, stay balanced, and be ready to counter. Make em miss, make em pay.

Catch. Slide. Close the door. Counter.

MY ROOTS. 🥊

This is the gym where I trained with my coach and many talented boxers he produced.

After our original gym closed down, we built this place together as a team in Dittmer, Missouri. Nothing fancy, just a real boxing gym built by our team and a few people who loved the sport.

My coach trained me alongside some incredibly talented fighters who qualified for the Olympic Trials, won national titles, and went on to fight professionally. The knowledge he passed down came through generations of fighters and great coaches before him. He taught me the art, the mindset behind being a skilled fighter, and what I believe is becoming the lost art of boxing.

I’m proud of where I come from, and I’m grateful that I now get to pass those same lessons on to young boxers and students of my own.

I dedicated most of my life to this sport and stepped into the ring more than 200 times. Even now, getting the opportunity to come back here, train, and spar with some of the young fighters my coach has accepted into the gym, it still feels like a privilege.

The sweat.
The sound of the timer.
Coach yelling at somebody to “PUT YOUR HANDS UP!”
The pop of the bags.
The tap of the jump rope against the ring canvas.
The stories and gym talk after training.

Two decades after I first experienced it in our original gym, somehow it still feels just as new to me.

These are my roots. 🥊
