Ryan had hunted Zambia before, but this was his first safari with a puku on quota.

There wasn't much question about who would get the opportunity.

After several stalks, Ryan and Bentley located two old rams. Bentley settled his Merkel KR1 Stutzen in .308 Wi******er onto the sticks, found his mark, and made a perfect shot.

It was a magnificent old puku.

More importantly, it was Bentley's first African animal.

And in Africa, some traditions deserve to be carried forward.

A little blood across the face marked the occasion and a moment between a father and son neither will soon forget.

Some parts of a safari don't need much of an introduction.

Record rains had left the Zambian bush thick and the early-season creeks still flowing. At one crossing, the Land Cruiser sank hard on the left side and only continued sliding deeper into the mud.

For the next thirty minutes, it was winch cable, mud, and whatever it took to get the truck moving again.

Eventually, they pulled free.

No trophy. No grand story.

Just another day in the African bush.
