Blake Sorensen; Denver HS/Upper Iowa
Blake is the son of Dwight and Julie Sorensen and the oldest brother to Denver-Tripoli standouts, Brock and Brandon. Blake was a 4X Iowa HS State Wrestling placer for Denver-Tripoli. He placed in the top 4 at state each of those years, going 2-4-3-3. He finished with a career record of 178-8. Over half of his career losses were at state. He was a huge part of Denver-Tripoli teams that placed 2nd in state duals and traditional state in 2009 and won both of those his Senior year in 2010. Every bracket he was ever in was an absolute cobra’s nest.
Blake went on to wrestle at Upper Iowa University and was the NSIC Rookie Of The Year his Freshman year and D2 National runner-up as a Sophomore. He won 98 matches for them, finishing with a career collegiate record of 98-38.
Blake’s brother, Brandon was a 4X Iowa HS state champion and a 4X AA/1X finalist for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was also a 6X AAU State Champion, which means he won AAU state every year he competed in it. I mean, prior to college, Brandon was literally the poster-boy for Iowa wrestling postseason perfection. And obviously his D1 accolades at Iowa are incredible as well. He very well may be the best HS wrestler to ever come from the state of Iowa and if he’s not, at the minimum, a case can be made for him. And what’s crazy is that Blake was on pace to putting together a similar wrestling resume himself, all the way until the semifinal round at AAU state his 8th grade year. Get this… coming into that tournament, Blake was a 5X AAU State Champion and going for 6 when he blew out his knee in the semis. This knee injury was one that lingered around and got progressively worse as his career unraveled the next 8-9 years until he graduated at Upper Iowa. To boot, he blew out his other knee as well. Blake Sorensen placed in the top 4 at state in HS and was a D2 National Runner-Up and did it with two bad knees that were routinely repaired via surgery.
On another note, imagine if Blake hadn’t injured his knee in the semis at AAU State as an 8th grader… that would be 2 Sorensen brothers who won 6 AAU titles. To this day, in the history of the Iowa AAU State Tournament, I don’t think two brothers have ever done that before. Just imagine what would have been had that knee injury not happened.
