Learning how to swim is a lifelong journey, and it takes more than a few 30-minute lessons to build true confidence in the water.

If your child is signed up for lessons, one of the best things you can do is make time to get them in the pool outside of their lesson time. Even just practicing once a week as a family can make a big difference.

Swimming is like any other sport or activity — progress comes with repetition. If a child takes one 30-minute lesson a week for 4–8 weeks, that equals only 2–4 total hours of instructional swim time. The rest of that confidence, comfort, and skill-building has to come from time in the water outside of lessons.

The more time your child spends practicing, playing, and moving through the water, the more comfortable they’ll become. That extra time in the water helps their skills carry over, their confidence grow, and their body learn how the water feels.

Mrs. K’s Swim Lesson Diaries

Here’s what we’re working on during week 2:

•Streamline glides with face submerged
•Freestyle arms to the cheese mat
•Back and front floats
•Back float for a breath
•Rolling from back float to front and continue freestyle arms to the cheese mat
•Treading water near cheese mat
•Start freestyle arms from cheese mat to the stairs

Lots of floating (front and back) and lots of starting and stopping. I want the kids to be able to start and stop at any point in the pool and feel that they have control over where they’re heading. They’re going to work on calming themselves and not panicking when the wall is out of reach.

I hope you all have a chance to make swimming a priority for you and your family this week. Don’t forget that the more time that’s put into a skill, the better the outcome!

See you all soon😎

For swimmers ages 6 months to 3 years, progress is not always measured by how many skills they perform during one lesson.

At this age, progress often looks like:

• Getting more comfortable in the water
• Building trust with the instructor
• Tolerating new sensations
• Exploring movement
• Recovering faster after frustration
• Becoming more familiar with the lesson routine

Crying, resisting, or having an off day can be part of the process.

The goal is not forced performance. The goal is a safe, healthy relationship with the water.

No, swim lessons will never drown-proof any child.

But they do teach skills that will dramatically reduce their risk of drowning:

Breath control.
Floating.
Kicking.
Turning around.
Reaching for the wall.

A study found that formal swim lessons were associated with an 88% reduction in drowning risk for children ages 1-4

Drowning prevention works best in layers. Swim lessons are one of those layers.

Parent Observation & Lesson Environment Guide

One of the best parts of private lessons is that parents get to watch their child learn, grow, and build confidence in real time.

This Parent Hub section explains how to support your swimmer during lessons in a way that keeps the environment calm and focused.

Parents are welcome to observe, and I love when families are involved in the learning process. The most helpful support usually looks like staying present, staying relaxed, and allowing your swimmer time to respond to instruction.

Kids feel pressure quickly, even when it comes from a loving place. A calm pool deck helps them stay focused, try new skills, and build confidence at their own pace.

Please read through these slides before your first lesson.

Weather, Illness, & Makeup Lesson Policies

Please read through the Weather, Illness, and Makeup Lesson Policies before your swimmer’s first lesson.

This section explains how I handle weather calls, cooler water days, sick swimmers, instructor illness, SwimSpa backup options, and Wednesday makeup lessons.

These policies help keep the season safe, organized, productive, and fair for every family.

Makeup lessons are offered when possible and are typically placed on Wednesdays.
