The Rick Fawley Legacy Tournament

This weekend was about so much more than fishing.

This event embodied everything NVKBA values. It gave us an opportunity to come together on Lake Anna and remember a friend who meant so much to NVKBA. Rick was part of the fabric of this club, and his friendship, personality, and love for this sport left an impact that will continue long after his time with us.

We miss him, and we hope this tournament becomes one small way that Rick’s legacy continues to introduce others to the outdoors and the sport he loved.

We are incredibly grateful to every angler who came out and fished, as well as those who couldn’t make it but still contributed to the cause. We also had several additional donors step forward, and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity.

Because of all of you, we raised nearly $1,000, exceeding our goal!

That means NVKBA will be able to donate multiple kayaks to children in Rick’s honor at the upcoming Virginia DWR Youth Sportsman’s Day on September 12 at Lake Curtis Park.

There is something incredibly fitting about Rick’s name helping put kids into kayaks and introducing them to the outdoors.

Rick would be proud.

A huge thank you also goes to our two amazing sponsors who provided some incredible prizes for our anglers in lieu of traditional payouts.

Every angler who showed up to awards went home with some awesome custom tackle donated by Chris with 007 Custom Baits, LLC, and our champion will be linking up with Ms. Carrie Emerson of Fish Around and Find Out for some custom apparel!

And finally, congratulations to Marquesen on an incredible day, taking home both 1st Place AND Biggest Bass!

Final Results

🥇 1st — Andrew Marquesen (MD) — 50.75”
🥈 2nd — Mike Hoskey (VA) — 49.25”
🥉 3rd — David Thompson — 48.00”

🏆 Biggest Bass — Andrew Marquesen

Thank you again to everyone who fished, donated, sponsored, shared, or simply helped us honor our friend.

We look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks, when NVKBA will personally deliver the kayaks to the kids following the Virginia DWR Youth Sportsman’s Day. We can’t think of a better way to carry Rick’s legacy forward than helping the next generation get on the water and experience the outdoors that he loved so much.

Rick, going to your lake wasn’t the same without you there, brother. This one was for you. 🎣

Competition. Community. Camaraderie.

See you at the Rick Fawley Memorial Classic right back here on September 25th. 💪

2026 NVKBA TRAIL STOP #7 RECAP
THE BATTLE OF FIVE LAKES II (SOUTH), Saturday, August 15th

The final stop of the 2026 NVKBA regular season is complete, and this one was one for the history books.

For the first time in NVKBA Trail Series history, we have a 100-INCH BAG.

Huge congratulations to Jimmy James Coleman, who absolutely blew the doors off this event with a perfect 100.00 inches and became the first angler in NVKBA history to enter the CENTURY CLUB!

Jimmy’s historic bag:

21.00” | 21.00” | 19.50” | 19.50” | 19.00” = 100.00”

And the crazy part? He put that bag together before we even reached the halfway point of the event. From there, the rest of the field pretty much knew they were fishing for second place.

A commanding win from an unexpected lake, too. Which one? You’ll have to talk to Jimmy if you want the juice! 😂

We’ll be doing something special for Jimmy to recognize the first-ever Century Club performance, and going forward, every NVKBA angler who reaches the 100-inch mark will earn their place in the club.

The big fish showed up Saturday as well. Joel Giljam struck early with a beautiful 22.00” citation largemouth, before Allen Grim answered with an absolute beast measuring 22.50” to take Big Bass of the Day!

In total, six bass over 20 inches hit the board, with anglers earning their way into the NVKBA 20” Club and 22” Club.

TOP 10:
James Coleman (VA) — 100.00”
Eddie Butler (VA) — 88.75”
Nathan Updike (VA) — 88.00”
Michael Hogan (VA) — 86.00”
Greg Oaks — 82.25”
Chris Owens — 82.00”
Justin Largen (VA) — 79.50”
Lewis — 79.50”
Wheeler (MD) — 76.50”
Ty Adams Jr. (VA) — 73.25”

Congratulations to Jimmy, our entire Top 10, Allen on Big Bass, Joel on his citation, and every angler who came out and battled the summer heat for the final regular-season stop.

We can't thank 6 Bears & A Goat Brewing Company enough for their hospitality at our awards meetup! The food, drinks, and atmosphere is second to none, and it's become a regular highlight every year for us. Be sure to stop in and see for yourself!

With that, the 2026 NVKBA regular season is complete.

The Top 50 anglers in the final AOY standings, PLUS every 2026 Trail Series event winner regardless of AOY position, will qualify for the 2026 Rick Fawley Memorial Classic, Saturday, September 26th on Lake Anna.

The final qualifier list will be completed soon and shared with everyone.

In Rick’s honor, NVKBA will be donating kayaks to be raffled away to youth anglers at Youth Sportsman’s Day. More information on that event is coming soon. It is always an incredible day and one we are proud to support.

And, as always, a HUGE thank you to the sponsors and partners who continue to support this outfit and make what we do possible:

There’s only one left.

The final NVKBA Trail Series stop before the Classic is here.

2026 NVKBA Trail Stop #7 – The Battle of Five Lakes II

Five reservoirs across Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania will set the stage for one final test of the regular season.

This one won’t come easy. The summer heat will play its part, and success will require preparation, adaptability, and the ability to find quality fish when it matters most. These reservoirs are proven big bass factories, and citation largemouth are sure to be in play.

There’s still work to be done and points to be earned. Prepare accordingly and come ready to battle.

We’ll see you on the water.

Registration is now open for the Rick Fawley Legacy Tournament!

Join us on Saturday, August 29th at Lake Anna, VA as we honor the life and legacy of our friend, Rick Fawley.

This charity tournament is open to all kayak and canoe anglers, and no NVKBA membership is required. The event follows standard NVKBA tournament rules with a simplified format featuring a 3-fish limit and 12-inch minimum.

Event Details
- August 29, 2026
- Lake Anna, VA
- 6:00 AM – 11:00 AM
- Any public launch on Lake Anna is permitted
- $25 Entry Fee (plus applicable Fishing Chaos fee for non-subscribers)

Every dollar raised will go directly toward purchasing brand-new kayaks to be given away to children during the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources Youth Sportsman's Day on September 12th at Lake Curtis.

Rick was a tremendous advocate for getting people outdoors and introducing others to the sport of kayak fishing (and fishing in general!). We can't think of a better way to honor his legacy than by helping put kayaks into the hands of the next generation.

Even if you can't make the tournament, we encourage you to register if you're able. Your entry fee will be treated as a donation, and every contribution helps us get one step closer to giving away another kayak. If you don't have a Fishing Chaos account, no worries. Any outside donations can be accepted via the club PayPal ([email protected]).

A huge thank you to the sponsors who have already donated prizes in lieu of cash payouts. If you or your business would like to support this event through prize donations or sponsorship, please contact Mike Ortega Jr. via Facebook Messenger or email [email protected].
