What an incredible day on the mats with Shawn Melanson!
While looking through old photos, we came across a picture of Shawn and Jarod training together 8 years ago. It was a great reminder of how small the jiu-jitsu world really is.
One of the special things about this community is that if you stay involved long enough, keep training, and keep showing up, your paths have a way of crossing again. The friendships and connections built through jiu-jitsu often come full circle.
We’re grateful to have had Shawn share his knowledge with our team today and thankful to everyone who came out to learn and train. Days like these are a reminder of what makes the BJJ community so special.
Thank you, Shawn, and thank you to everyone who joined us on the mats today!

Is your child shy around new people?
You might be surprised to learn that some of our most confident students started out as the quietest ones.
BJJ helps kids build confidence, make friends, and discover what they’re capable of—one class at a time.

Tonight was all about being present. ❤️
No distractions, no rushing—just women showing up, training, laughing, and building new friendships. It was great to see so many new faces on the mats and watch connections being made.
Thankful for this community and everyone who spent their Friday night with us.

Unpopular parenting opinion:

People tell me all the time, “I don’t want to force my kids to do Jiu-Jitsu.”

I do.

Not because I want them to be fighters.

Not because I want them to win medals.

But because children don’t always know what’s best for them.

My kids would quit brushing their teeth, doing homework, cleaning their rooms, and eating vegetables if I let them.

Being a parent isn’t about letting your child decide everything. It’s about helping them develop the habits and character they’ll need later in life.

Most kids don’t quit because they truly hate Jiu-Jitsu.

They quit because it’s hard.

They get tired. They get frustrated. They lose. They struggle.Someone taps them out.

And those are exactly the moments I want them to learn from.

In a world that teaches kids to quit when things get uncomfortable, I want my kids to learn how to push through discomfort.

One day they’ll thank me—not for letting them quit when it got hard, but for teaching them they were capable of more than they thought.

Call me old-fashioned, but my kids aren’t quitting Jiu-Jitsu.

What’s your opinion? Would you let your child quit?👇👇👇

One of the best parts of jiu-jitsu is the people you get to share the journey with. The training partners who push you, challenge you, laugh with you, and make even the toughest rounds enjoyable. The mats just aren’t quite the same when they’re not there. Here’s hoping we get some rounds in before the week is over! ❤️

Today’s Team Training was a reminder that the best gyms build more than athletes—they build people.

Watching kids and adults train side by side, laugh together, learn together, and support each other is what makes a team strong. The kids see who they can become. The adults remember why they started.

If your gym isn’t creating connections between generations, building mentorship, and bringing people together like family, you’re missing the best part of martial arts.

This is bigger than jiu-jitsu. This is community. This is family. This is Team Lawton. 💙
