River Point Bird Observatory

River Point Bird Observatory River Point Bird Observatory is a wildlife monitoring effort at River Point Conservation Area dedicated to monitoring the migration and health of birds.

In 2011, Biodiversity Research Institute began a wildlife monitoring effort at River Point Conservation Area with the primary goal of establishing a migratory bird monitoring station. In collaboration with the Town of Falmouth, BRI biologists set up mist nets to capture birds, which are banded and released unharmed. Since its inception, researchers have banded thousands of songbirds, trained handfuls of interns, and shared their work with over a thousand students and community members.

Hello Portland, ME area network. I am involved in trying to hire an excellent mist net production staff person to join our Maine team at Avinet Research Supplies. It is ideal work for a person who is dextrous, patient, and can do things efficiently. We offer training and benefits. Work occurs in a comfortable space. Please share the opportunity with those who might be interested and able! Thank you!

River Point Bird Observatory Celebrated this October by sharing a day of banding with the Kartong Bird Observatory of Western Gambia! Though the time differences and weather made it difficult to showcase our full banding operation, we still enjoyed discussing the birds captured, our techniques, and the connections we share through bird conservation and research. A special thanks to Colin Cross and his great ringing team for connecting with us as we look forward to more opportunities to connect with them.

Fall migration is underway at River Point! We captured 44 birds yesterday (20 of them being Gray Catbirds..) as well as some migrating warblers. Can you tell who is an Orange-crowned Warbler and who is a Tennessee Warbler? Fall warblers are always a fun challenge.
