Lawrence School 8th grader and Falmouth High School girls ice hockey player Emma Ga***rd has had the opportunity this year to participate in the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s first-year mentorship program.
The program is a collaboration between PWHL and Strong Girls United, and is described as a “new model for how professional sports can connect with youth—combining athlete mentorship, mental skills, and community to inspire confidence, leadership, and belonging both on and off the ice.”
Each team in the PWHL has 15 mentees, selected through an open application process, and three PWHL player-mentors. There are 120 girls in the program, grades 8-9, across the eight PWHL teams in the USA and Canada.
Ga***rd attends two monthly virtual sessions, one call is led by SGU and is a large workshop with all 120 athletes where they talk to experts and focus on confidence, resilience, teamwork and mental wellness. The second call in the month includes the PWHL athlete mentors.
