State Claims No One Has Sought Information from New Registration Database

Two years after the passage of Chapter 135 and the new firearm registration portal being in place, GOAL was curious how the system was being used. As a result, we sent the following request for public records to the Massachusetts Department of Criminal Justice Information Systems (DCJIS) seeking to find out who, if anyone, had requested the information the Commonwealth has begun collecting:

"I am requesting the opportunity to inspect or obtain copies of public records that pertain to any public records requests for data regarding fi****ms transactions. This would include: the organization or individual requesting the data, what fields they were seeking, what was provided, and, if available, for what purpose."

After the initial request, DCJIS asked for clarification regarding dates. (See below) We requested any and all records of any inquiries after October 29, 2025 as this was when the new registration portal went live. According to the final response we received there have been no records requests for information maintained in the portal database.

“So nobody is using this expensive unconstitutional monstrosity of a system?” said Jim Wallace, Executive Director of GOAL. “You’re telling us that no law enforcement, no other government entity, no private entity has ever requested data held within the new system? How can that possibly be. If that is the case, then what is the purpose of all of the registration mandates and record keeping?”

This new mystery even further complicates the devious true intentions of Chapter 135.
