Official PAFL Statement

The Broncos vs. Bengals game will be ruled a no contest.

The PAFL currently plays under NCAA Division I on-field rules with professional timing rules. This format was originally created after multiple officials expressed that using full college timing would extend games and require owners to pay significantly more in officiating costs. In an effort to meet in the middle, the Commissioner attempted to blend the two systems. Unfortunately, that format created confusion and proved not to be effective.

Moving forward, the PAFL will use NCAA rules and NCAA timing.

Here is what occurred:

The game was tied 35-35 with 13 seconds remaining. The Broncos ran the ball and gained a first down. They had no timeouts remaining. Under professional timing rules, regulation should have ended, sending the game to overtime. However, under NCAA timing rules, the clock stops after a first down. The officials believed that rule applied and added three seconds back to the clock.

After reviewing the situation, the Commissioner met with an advisory board made up of former owners who have no ties to any current team. After discussion, the board felt that ruling the game a no contest was the fairest decision due to the league’s confusing rule structure.

We would like to sincerely apologize to both teams, the officials, and the fans. What was intended to help the league instead caused confusion and took away from what should have been a classic game.

We believe this rule change will eliminate these issues moving forward.
