FLAG DAY - June 14, 2026
Flag Day is celebrated annually on June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the American flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1777. While it is not a federal holiday, it is widely observed nationwide through parades, patriotic displays, and presidential proclamations.
President Donald Trump's birthday is on Flag Day, as he was born on June 14, 1946.

THIS WORK OF GENIUS IS ROCK-SOLID
NEW BEDFORD - The award winning pride of The Army Corps of Engineers, quietly has been guarding the inside of New Bedford Harbor’s 29.4 square-mile drainage area of The Acushnet River from dangerous hurricane surges since 1966. The gates of The New Bedford-Fairhaven Hurricane Barrier recently underwent a 7-month overhaul which was completed in June 2022.
A contractor on sight mentioned that he’s never seen such rock work so meticulously placed. The Army Corps of Engineers show nearly a million man-hours of labor, planning and testing went into the four year project. Over 900,000 tons of boulders were hauled from a quarry in Dartmouth, MA.

60th ANNIVERSARY OF BARRIER COMPLETION
NEW BEDFORD - This vintage 1962 film shows the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier under construction during it's earliest phase. Coffer dams were built and later pumped out to begin the complex construction of the control towers and gate assembly 40ft down to the bedrock below the surface of the Acushnet River outer entrance near Palmer's Island and Fort Phoenix. The New Bedford-Fairhaven Hurricane Barrier was completed with a dedication ceremony in 1966.
*ML's Note: In it's 60-years, the barrier succesfully fought back a 6.8 foot tidal surge from the only direct-impact hurricane to test the design on August 19, 1991 from Hurricane Bob.

LIKE IT OAR KNOT
A rare sighting of a speed racing scull zipped by our Harborcam. This amazing boat sliced through the water with hardly a wake.
The hull hardly visible, made the crew appear to be sitting on the water. Link: https://newbedfordrowing.org/
The crew of rowers of newbedfordrowing.org had the tide and weather on their side. The temperature was 76.1 with a gentle westerly breeze at 5 MPH. The water temperature in Buzzards Bay was 66 degrees. Above normal temperatures and decreasing humidity are in the forecast for the final-full weekend of Spring.
