Halloween time is upon us. Taking the kids around the neighborhood for candy and getting dressed up! It is always a busy time for my family since we have all three of our birthdays coming right in a row, mine on the 30th, wife's on the 31st and my son, Avery on the 4th of Nov. Gym time took a hit last week as I tweaked my neck muscles. Healing I have realized happens at a much slower pace than when I was a decade younger! But, I am in the right mindset to just let the healing work and get back at it when the pain is gone! Starting to get back into HIIT workouts mixed with cardio and some additional strength training.
The mental mind game is strong right now. Balancing rest, physical activity, work, quality time with family and friends and keeping on track with our budgeting to meet financial goals in the future. Just one of these going wrong or not on track with what your plans are is enough to derail everything. But, you have to keep focus. For me that is keeping a journal, keeping my mind fixed on the most important things that I am trying to remain on task with. God, Family and Personal. It's okay to put something on the back burner for a little bit, or get off track for a day, week, or month. But, make sure you have a plan to get back on track and a mental and physical note on what that plan is and to work it! Anything worth doing well is worth putting the work in.

Thank you and enjoy the rants until I decide how to focus the blog.

Another start and it is October, coming up on my 42nd birthday - COVID hit me fairly bad in terms of job loss, fitness and mentality. For some, this time was unrecoverable in a mental health issue and we need to quit thinking that going to therapy is a bad stigma. Go to therapy, work on yourself and be there for your family and friends. We are here on this Earth to care for others and to enjoy the wonders with other people, not to just live for ourselves!
Fitness - I stopped completely after my gym shut down and quickly gained 50 lbs without managing my eating and falling into unhealthy eating habits. Within the past 5 months I have been slowly getting back to it. Picking up my running which is tough because I am out of breath at 2 miles and 11:30 min/mile pace. This is a combination of lung capacity and being out of shape, extra weight added on, plus age related exercise ability. Harder to get back into! I have decided to get out of my head and just slowly build to where I want to be. Now strong enough to follow CrossFit homepage WOD's at the beginner level and supplementing extra cardio into the program as well.
Job - Back into the work force, but starting over for the moment until I get back into a management role. This was a big blow to my ego and took me almost a year to move past through journal writing and working through this internally!
I want to has out what this blog should look like and also make it reflect what I am thinking about daily/weekly and hopefully it helps others that find this just through search! If this turns out and I am happier I may condense this and move over to Instagram and try to get something started!

Regards,

Brian

Wow, I can't believe I started this page and since 2012 have abandoned it... I want to keep this going and maybe build a follow ship. Let's start off with ambitions, what did your 12 year old self dream of, want to be, want to accomplish?

My 12 year old self wanted to be my Dad, not the profession he was a police officer... I wanted to be the embodiment of him, an awesome Dad, authority figure, a military man...I can say I have accomplished the military man side, that's easy. All you have to do is sign up, be present get shipped overseas and not get shot! My 36 year old self still wants to embody my Dad, but having lost him when I was just turning 16 has turned that into a bigger question...what was he thinking at 36, what were his dreams, his ambitions, his goals...I may never know....I may never know if I have made him proud, lived up to the expectations he may have had for me... I can tell you I don't feel that I am or have at this moment and that is enough to reflect and start changing the present.

It's been a while since I've updated the page...a ton of changes in my personal life and not keeping up on this page... The Thanksgiving dinner is behind us and now it is time to cancel out those calories before Another holiday season is before us. Just remember it is just another day, regardless of the amount of food prepared by loved ones, the body doesn't know or care about the extra 5,000 calories we ingest!
If you need a workout to take care of that extra piece of pie try this:
5 rounds for time
10 body builders
10 box step-ups
Run 400 yards

As the Olympics heads into the last week of competition I thought I would raise a couple questions. Will there ever be a time when an athlete won't be able to break a world or olympic record in a sporting event such as swimming or track? Also, what's one thing that you can take away from the Olympics that can better the life you live daily?

A question that often comes up when people I meet ask what I majored in and I tell them nutrition is what diet I like the best?
Why is it the American Population is so concerned with dieting, we really don't see any other "diet" cultures as perverse as this one here. People in other cultures refer to their eating habits as their diet. Although it is a relatively new concept, we need to think about a Lifestyle Change, or as Dietitians refer to counseling their patients, a Therapeutic Lifestyle Change. It has to be something that you can maintain for an indefinite amount of time that will allow you to consume all of your calories, vitamins and minerals with minimal to no supplementation.
It clicked for me while studying nutrition that I had to also learn exercise physiology as well as a little human history. Over 40,000 years of existence or evolution our DNA has only changed .02%, I am sorry to say that .02% also had nothing to do with changing our bodies to accept fast food either.
As the majority of microwave dinners, fast food options and processed "food" created in labs has been given to the American populace in abundance without much thought as to how this will affect the human body over the course of 5,10,40,50 years...fast food only came into existence in the 1950's and then it was a "treat", now it is a way of life. We need to slow down as a culture, teach our sons and daughters how to cook, take time around the dinner table to get back to family and nourish our bodies with the same nutrients our ancestors have for the past tens of thousands of years. Last time I checked a dietitian, doctor or any other health practitioners never once came out to say you can not eat green beans, apples, strawberries, or any other whole food you can find in the first 30 feet of any grocery store in the country...it's not that much more expensive when you start buying smart, or maybe taking a little bit of our over sized yards and planting in-season gardens!

To those who think exercise as an end to itself? So, we go the gym, take time out of our busy days, an hour or two to put ourselves through the motion of a class or a routine that we have become accustomed to in the gym. Is this exercise? If you are merely putting your body through the motion, than I would say yes, if this makes you feel good that you have accomplished your routine it is an end to itself, but we are all natural athletes, the recommended dose of exercise is 30-45 minutes of strenuous "work" a day, something that get's our heart rate above a cardio level, for every s*x and age group that is different, you may want to consult your treadmill you're "working" on and see if you stay above that threshold the entire time. To those of you that are able to read a magazine or book, you're not pushing yourself hard enough, you won't lose the weight and you won't reach your goals! But, if you get out of your comfort zone, find yourself someone that is going to push you (doesn't have to be a trainer), outside your own comfort limits than you will notice measurable differences instantaneously.
In a culture of wanting instant gratification this is why HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is catching on so well and why CrossFit and others like it are a booming industry. It develop us to meet every challenge life throws at us, it keeps our bodies active and our energy levels up. Beats depression into submission and can accomplish this goal in as little as 10 minutes on certain days and 45 minutes on others, everything else after that is conditioning for sport specific or life specific training.
My question to you is this: What level of activity or energy do you want to have 10, 20, 30 or more years from now? What you to do today affects what you will be able to accomplish later in life.
